The Center for the Study of the Neurobiology of Addiction, Pain and Emotion Research Lab (NAPE) has an outstanding opportunity for Research Technologist I to assist with the study of elucidating the neuronal circuits involved in stress and anxiety. The Research Technologist I will be supervised by the Principle Investigator (PI), Dr. Garret Stuber. In this study, a variety of genetically modified mice are used. Developing and implementing behavioral procedures for experiments related to motivation and reward are neededAs a center of excellence that collaborates with many departments and schools in the University (Division of Psychiatry and Behavior Sciences in the Department of Medicine; School of Pharmacology; Neurobiology and others), the NAPE lab is associated with the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, located at the University of Washington’s Health Science Building. The research lab’s main goal is to delineate the neural circuits involved in the manifestation of neuropsychiatric disorders including addiction, maladaptive eating behaviors, and anxiety. On a larger scale, the lab aims to determine how neural circuit elements directly regulate motivated behavioral states. In order to accomplish this, the lab uses in vivo optogenetic during automated measurements of naturalistic behavior.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assist research projects 75%

Prepare shared stock solutions such as PBS and 4% paraformaldehyde.

Operate histology experiment that includes mouse perfusion, brain sectioning, immunostaining, in situ hybridization, microscopy imaging, and analysis.

Perform mouse behavioral studies and surgery under supervisor’s instruction.

Compile the data and present to supervisor and schedule next experiment. Mouse colony management 20%

Understand and follow UW animal care policy.

Design efficient breeding strategy with supervisor.

Set up breeding cages, ensure the effectiveness of mating, wean pups.

Perform genotyping which involves ear-punching, genome extraction, PCR, electrophoresis and image acquisition.

Update the mice record using online tool, mLIMS, and manage the holding cages as needed.

Transfer mouse cages between facilities upon requests.

Provide report and review on-going project with supervisor.

Communicate with veterinary staff when animals’ health issue is identified and take appropriate action immediately. Assist lab manager with administrative tasks 5%

Responsible for assisting the lab manager with daily lab operation.

Dishwashing/autoclaving laboratory glassware.

Mail packing slips to finance department.

Monitor consumable lab supplies and update inventory.

Train new undergrads/Postdocs when requested. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelors Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology OR

Two years experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Experience with mouse care including handling, husbandry and familiar with animal use policies. Other procedures include administering euthanasia, performing perfusion, and sacrificing rodents.)

Experience with mouse colony management including breeding and genotyping.

Experience with histology experiment: Perfusion, sectioning with vibratome or cryostat, immunostaining or in situ hybridization, image acquisition, data analysis.

Experience with handling chemicals.

Having strong PC skills like Microsoft Office applications.

Excellent in communication and teamwork.

Excellent in time-management and organizing skills. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with a variety of scientific software's. For image analysis, image J, Olympus CellSens, HALO and Zen. For data visualization, CorelDraw, Adobe illustrator and photoshop.

Experience with writing code with Python or R.

Experience with animal surgery and behavior experiment.
