About the Job

You will enjoy three day weekends as the required working hours are from 6:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Thursday. Voluntary overtime opportunities may be available for additional income. Once hired you may request to schedule unpaid time off, as needed and subject to approval.

There is a variety of work to be performed through spring, summer and early fall. Duties may include:

assigned to work on a road crew performing a variety of duties

flagging, weed whacking, weeding retention ponds, landscaping,

working on an asphalt paving or patching crew,

clearing fallen trees and roadside debris removal

We are hiring Seasonal Road Maintenance Workers in three Hire Groups. Seasonal employment is limited to six months in duration. The end date of your seasonal assignment will be determined by the start date.

Eligibility Register

Physical Abilities Test (PAT) and Drug Screening:

Applicants will be emailed instructions on how to schedule a required Physical Abilities Test (PAT) and drug and alcohol screening.

The PAT will include a drug and alcohol screening, medical examination and Physical Evaluation Fitness Test performed by a qualified healthcare professional selected by Snohomish County. This is a laborer position involving a variety of routine manual labor tasks. This includes frequent bending, twisting and stooping, frequent lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, constant walking and standing. Physical exertion and vibration when operating tools such as: jackhammer, plate compactor, chainsaw, or exertion lifting objects weighing 50 pounds or more.

Applicants who have met all the requirements of the Conditional Offer Notice will be emailed an Offer Notice. The Offer Notice will include detailed information outlining the dates and requirements for your hire date/new employee orientation and Flagger Certification training.

Flagger Certification Training

Flagger Certification training is offered at no cost to applicants who do not possess a current valid Flagger Certification card. This training is on unpaid time. You must be at least 18 years old in order to receive a Flagger Certification card.

Employment Summary for a SEASONAL Road Maintenance Worker I:

Work Schedule: This is a seasonal position, scheduled to work 40 hours per week. You will work Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You may be required to work occasional evening, nights, weekends or holidays and are subject to mandatory overtime and callouts at any time including working evening shifts for emergency conditions (i.e. windstorms, snow & ice, floods, earthquakes, etc.). You must be able to change work locations within the County with little to no prior notice.

Position Equipment & Dress Code: Your position requires you to report to work with ASTM approved work boots. You will be reimbursed for your boots up to $300.00 with a legible original invoice. You will be required to wear other safety gear as appropriate for the work performed starting on your first day of employment. You will be provided with additional information at the time of a conditional offer

Driver License Requirements: You must have and maintain a valid State of Washington Driver's License which is required for employment.

State of Washington Traffic Flagging Card: You must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid State of Washington Traffic Flagging card within three (3) weeks of being hired. Snohomish County will provide training to obtain the Traffic Flagging Card.

Tardiness Policy: The Road Maintenance Division has firm attendance and tardiness policies.

Drug & Alcohol Testing: You will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Job Duties

BASIC FUNCTION

To perform a variety of unskilled manual labor tasks in support of road maintenance and repair operations. The Seasonal Road Maintenance Worker-I (RMW-I) position is an entry level position and subject to CDL random drug and alcohol testing and applicable federal and state regulations.

STATEMENT OF ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Safely performs all work zone traffic control duties including, but not limited to setting up barricades, traffic cones, and signs; and flagging traffic for stationary and moving work zones.

Loads and unloads equipment, materials and supplies.

Cleans and clears culverts, drainage ditches and other drainage structures and maintains vegetation using hand and power tools as necessary.

Cuts, rakes and disposes of brush and debris using a variety of hand and power tools including but not limited to weed eaters, chain saws and chippers; may pick up refuse and cleanup work and illegal dump sites.

Installs raised pavement markers, thermoplastic markings, and other types of traffic channelization devices.

Performs concrete and asphalt pavement installation, repair, patching and cleaning using a jackhammer and other hand and power tools as necessary; may manually prepare sub grade for paving; may assist in installing concrete drain tile and culvert pipe.

Performs manual labor tasks on projects including installation of concrete catch basins, retaining walls, walkways and other structures as directed; builds concrete forms and places reinforcing steel as required; mixes and pours concrete as necessary; trowels, sweeps and edges new concrete as necessary; may act as a carpenter's helper.

Performs routine preventative maintenance and cleaning of assigned equipment and tools; and completes service requests as needed.

Submits neat and complete written and electronic records including time sheets, maintenance history report forms and other records as directed.

Work out-of-class as a CDL equipment operator/truck driver as needed and assigned, including participating in emergency response as needed.

Drives a pickup truck or light duty diesel truck, less than 26,000 GVW.

STATEMENT OF OTHER JOB DUTIES

May operate a laptop computer, mobile data collector, digital camera, etc. as necessary to accomplish assigned work duties.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED or any equivalent combination of training and or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Must pass job related tests.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have and maintain a valid State of Washington Driver's License which is required for employment.

Maintain a satisfactory Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) driving record, periodically verified by current drivers abstract from the Department of Licensing (DOL).

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid State of Washington Traffic

Flagging card within three (3) weeks of being hired.

A valid First Aid card within ninety (90) days of employment is required.

All Road Maintenance Workers are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Job offer will be conditioned on a satisfactory review of a current and valid three year driver abstract from DOL; and satisfactory results of a post-offer drug screen test, a medical examination, and a Physical Capacities Evaluation performed by a qualified healthcare professional selected by Snohomish County. Applicants are subject to a criminal background check as part of the hiring process.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

The work involves a variety of routine manual labor tasks. This includes frequent bending, twisting and stooping, frequent lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, constant walking and standing. SUPERVISION

Employee reports to a lead worker, crew chief and/or supervisor as assigned. The work is routine in nature, and is performed under general supervision. Specific instructions are given for unusual or non-routine tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work is performed outdoors in a construction environment in all types of weather. The employee is also exposed to a variety of conditions such as: working in ditches, slopes, trenches, excavations, and on uneven terrain and slippery surfaces. Employees are exposed to a variety of potential hazards associated with working near traffic and around heavy construction and maintenance equipment. Employees may be required to work occasional evenings, nights, weekends or holidays and employees are subject to mandatory overtime and call-outs at any time including working evening shifts for emergency conditions (i.e. windstorms, snow & ice, floods, earthquakes, etc.) The employee must be able to change work locations within the County with little to no prior notice.
