Horse Handlers are responsible for equine management during hippotherapy treatments. The Handler is responsible for preparing and handling the horse prior to, during and following a treatment session. They work directly with the Therapist to alter the movement of the horse to cause a response in the patient during the session. They are responsible for always monitoring the safety and well-being of the horse. They are expected to meet the highest standards of safety, communication, planning and evaluation. Handlers provide guidance, support, and feedback to volunteers. This position reports directly to the Therapy Services Director.
Specific activities include, but are not limited to:
Tacking up the horse and preparing for session, Warm-ups, cool downs, and untacking the horse
Long lining or leading for hippotherapy treatments
Writing behavior reports as needed
Interacting with equine, therapy, and volunteer teams to assist in the horse's behaviors and health
