Shellfish farm crew

Crew positions are available for part-time farm work this spring and summer, May through August. I operate a shellfish farm and hire seasonal labor crews to harvest, maintain and prepare to plant geoduck clams.

Our work schedule aligns with extreme low tides and is on a shellfish farms near Olympia and Allyn. The work is based out of Olympia, WA. I am organizing a summer labor crew that can commit to low tide work shifts, but other shifts will be available if interested. The tide work schedule is: (tide runs)

-May (7, 9, 10, 11), then (24, 25, 26, 27)

-June (5, 6, 7, 8), then (23, 24, 25)

-July (3, 5, 6), then (20, 21, 22)

-August (2, 3,), then (18, 19, 20)

Shifts on tide days are 5-7 hours and are at variable start times surrounding the mid-day low tide, generally between 9am and 4pm. You will be transported to farm sites on a boat.

You will need to provide your own transportation (to local marinas). All necessary gear is provided (boots, waders, gloves). This work is very wet and sandy, with lots of bending and kneeling - we have a great time, but this work is not for everyone. The work is physical labor with hustle.

This labor job is in the field, so farm employees are required to sit, stand and walk on uneven ground; stoop, bend, twist, and squat repetatively. Employees needs to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. (Regularly required to exert up to 20 lbs. of force, frequently required to exert up to 50 lbs. of force, occasionally required to exert up to 125 lbs. of force). Additional physical requirements include vision requirements for close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; employees must be able to speak and hear well enough to communicate with co-workers and supervisors; employees must be able to use hands for repetitive simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation; and employees must have agility and balance to safely climb on machines, boats, etc.

This work can be very rewarding; if you are interested let me know, and please mention why you think this work would be a good fit for you. I prefer to hire local (Olympia) folks with shellfish, fisheries, agriculture or general labor experience. Tell me where you live and of any farm or labor experience you have.

All of the labor crew are W2 (payroll) employees of the farm. Paychecks are issued on the first of the month. I am committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, material status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status. We also consider qualified applicants regardless of criminal histories, consistent with federal, state and local ordinances.
