Part-Time Overnight Shelter Staff (Temporary)
Friends of Youth has an immediate need for essential services positions. Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of the youth in our community? Now through 1/3/2021, premium pay of $2 more per hour will be offered for this position!
The Part-Time Shelter Staff provides direct service to young adults experiencing homelessness and is responsible for successfully maintaining a safe and supportive shelter program. This position implements agency and program policies, as well as the shelter schedule and processes, and are also responsible for the safety and cleanliness of the facility.
This is a temporary position through 3/25/2021, with possibility of extension.
SCHEDULE: 25 hours per week; Mondays and Tuesdays, 8:00PM - 8:30AM (overnight shifts)
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Direct Service
1. Maintain security of facility and grounds during shift.
2. Responsible to know whereabouts of every guest during shelter
3. Respect confidentiality of the young adult and their family.
4. Provide a safe, caring and non-judgmental environment for the young adults.
5. Respect differences in young adult’ cultural and social identities, religious backgrounds, sexual orientation, and gender identities.
6. Check all young adults into The Landing during scheduled times.
7. Conduct searches of each guests’ belongings at check-in to ensure the removal of any prohibited items.
8. Initiate intake and ensure completion for any young adult who is admitted during their shift.
9. Help to serve and clean-up meals.
10. Monitor laundry and showers.
11. Check-in with guests on Shelter extension goal completion.
12. De-escalate guest conflicts as they arise to ensure a safe environment.
13. Report extraordinary changes in young adult’s behavior or situation to Program
Coordinator.
14. Check email and respond as needed to programmatic communications.
15. Work collaboratively with the shelter staff team. This includes communicating positive affirmations as well as constructive criticisms, to team members, with the goal of fostering a healthy team environment.
B. Program Tasks
1. Attend all HYS, Case Consult, and Landing Staff Meetings.
2. Complete Weekly Check-In with Program Coordinator to ensure consistency in programming.
3. Ensure doors and other aspects of the facility are appropriately secured at both the beginning and end of each shift.
4. Maintain prescribed medications and checked in items in a secure area.
5. Facilitate walk-through and safety checks in areas surrounding shelter.
6. Ensure following of laundry and procedures and completion of laundry each shift.
7. Complete cleaning responsibilities each shift.
C. Administrative Duties
1. Maintain guest records in Youth Force database.
2. Maintain accurate guest files.
3. Complete client exits as needed during shift.
4. Ensure copies of necessary file forms are stocked.
5. Assist with file collection for quarterly file review.
6. Ensure Landing Shelter Tracker is up to date each week.
7. Ensure all WATCH background checks for new and returning guests are completed during shift.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
A. Education and Experience
Experience working with young adults; experience working with young adults who are experiencing homelessness preferred.
Bachelor's Degree in the Social Sciences field preferred.
B. Additional Requirements
Must satisfactorily pass criminal background check.
Must satisfactorily pass tuberculosis (TB) test.
Must successfully complete the following health certification requirements within 30 days of employment: CPR, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens training, Food Handlers Permit.

Ability to provide Trauma Informed Care and Harm Reduction services to shelter guests.
Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of clients in crisis.
Ability to interact with volunteers and provide leadership.
Ability to work collaboratively with other staff, community partners and law enforcement.
Demonstrates an appropriate maturity level to supervise and support young adults.
