For twenty years, I have been developing solutions for my Fortune 500 company, solving highly complex problems and generating millions of dollars in revenue. Then, the layoffs came. People with years of service and proven problem-solving abilities were no longer seen as family. The company had become a business that no longer valued its most important asset: the people. Teams were cut, friends and colleagues were gone, and the remaining staff had to pick up the pieces and carry on. They were asked to do more with less, accepting increased workloads and small bonuses.
As time passed, these tech companies posted enormous profits. Stock valuations soared, but bonuses and stock options were cut, hiring was frozen, and a return to the office was mandated.
What if there was another way? What could tech workers create if they pooled their resources in a cooperative to build technology and solve problems, they knew about but couldn’t tackle alone? What if all members had an equal stake in the effort? How much effort would you put in if you knew everyone was committed to making the idea succeed?
The Technology Cooperative is an old idea updated for today’s world. A group of people would collaborate to create technology, and the creators would be rewarded proportionally for their efforts.
