Job Summary:
The Fleet & Facilities Maintenance Assistant (Mechanic & Maintenance Assistant) works under the supervision and direction of the Fleet Mechanics & Shop Supervisor to perform inspections and repairs to fleet vehicles, general maintenance of fleet vehicles, shop, and facilities, and other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
Helps mechanics perform maintenance and repairs such as tune-ups and oil changes, checks tires and brakes, replaces spark plugs and engages in other similar tasks.
Assists mechanics with electrical systems such as replacing batteries, starters, and lights.
Test drives vehicles to ensure repairs have been completed properly.
Cleans the shop and returns tools to the proper location.
Maintains inventory of replacement parts and equipment.
Inspects tools and equipment to ensure they are in working order.
Updates maintenance and repair logs for vehicles.
Performs inspections and preventive maintenance tasks on vehicles and equipment including police, fire, and emergency service vehicles, automobiles, trucks, utility equipment, park equipment, small motors, and transit vehicles.
Performs maintenance related functions such as: lubricating vehicle/equipment, installing batteries, detailing vehicles, doing cleanup, or assisting the coordinator in identifying and doing make ready/make sale functions.
Operates mechanical tools, shop computers, and other equipment such as: hoists, jacks, tire changers, power hand tools, diagnostic instruments, and welding equipment; and observes safe working practices and procedures.
Participates in training in a variety of maintenance and repair tasks, parts procurement, safety practices, administration, and trade skills applied in the fleet maintenance facility.
Production tasks as needed (Pre-job set up including placing No Parks, 811s, etc.)
Assists with maintenance and repair of all Seattle Tree Care facilities and grounds
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
1+ years of mechanical experience preferred
Strong communication skills, written and verbal
Punctual and reliable
Proficiency with technology, including record keeping through the use of applications and spreadsheets
Requirements and Skills:
Valid WA Driver’s License
Current CPR certification (or the ability to obtain within the first 3 months of hire)
Ability to pass background check
The ability to lift, push, and pull 75 pounds
The ability to respond quickly to sounds
The ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces
The ability to see and respond to dangerous situations
The ability to work in varying environmental conditions
The ability to wear personal protective gear correctly most of the day
The ability to reach overhead
The ability to grasp objects for prolonged periods of time
The ability to hear verbal commands
The ability to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and heavy machinery
The ability to stand for extended periods of time
