Assistant Grocery Manager

Position: Assistant Grocery Manager

Status: Full-time Permanent

Reports to: Grocery Manager

Job Functions: Assist & support the Grocery Manager in overseeing the operations of the store’s Grocery Department. The assistant manager is responsible for day-to-day training, supervising, and evaluating the Grocery Department staff while fostering a team environment and meeting department objectives. The assistant grocery manager is responsible for providing support for Grocery Department staff with customer service questions, special orders, merchandising, and cleaning projects. The assistant grocery manager acts as a backup for the Grocery Manager when necessary, maintaining quality service, handling complaints, and monitoring department inventory.

Responsibilities:

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Take initiative to assist customers with product questions, in a prompt, friendly, helpful manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.

Address customer concerns and complaints, referring them to other management when necessary.

Provide product information to customers, staff and marketing manager. Read literature assigned by supervisor and stay informed of the latest trends related to your department.

Ensure customer calls for Grocery are answered.

STOCKING

Assist the Grocery Manager in overseeing and ensuring that the Grocery crew follows proper stocking procedures:

Rotation, accurate and neat product placement, and a sense of urgency.

Fully stocked, rotated, and faced sections.

Short dated or low-quality items are pulled, and established procedures for recording and disposing of them are followed, in a timely manner. Apply for credits if necessary.

Shelf tags are in place and correct. Price discrepancies are reported to the data department.

Fill in for members on the grocery team as needed & Plan, build, and oversee the creation of displays as needed.

DEPARTMENT MAINTENANCE

Assist the Grocery Manager in overseeing and ensuring that the Grocery Department runs effectively:

Keep shelves, coolers, back stock and bins in clean, orderly condition. Dust and clean shelves and product. Remove and recycle trash promptly, sweep and mop floor as directed or needed.

Make sure proper signage and tags are placed.

Thoroughly work through back-room stock weekly.

Maintain department equipment in working order and use it safely. Monitor cooler and freezer temperatures (where applicable) and follow established procedures for handling breakdowns. Advise Store Manager & VP of Operations of equipment problems or needs.

Record department shrink promptly and accurately.

MANAGEMENT

Direct Grocery staff to remain on task and productive.

Train and assist grocery members as needed, answering questions to the best of your ability, saving concern for when Grocery Manager returns when needed. Fill in Grocery Manager duties when Grocery manager is not present.

Communicate with vendors and Reps. when necessary, advising them to come back when Grocery Manager returns if necessary.

OTHER

Ensure all practices meet, and staff is trained in, safe food handling and storage as specified by the Health Department.

Enforce safe working procedures for all employees, advising other managers of concerns when needed.

Propose new ideas for efficiency or products for the store.

Provide input, feedback, and criticism to Grocery Manager as needed and when necessary.

Perform other tasks assigned by your Supervisor (Manager).

Qualifications:

Must be available to work weekends, nights, opening shifts, and be willing to be called in on a day off.

Willingness and ability to learn to meet the changing demands of the job. Able to handle multiple demands.

Experience serving the public. Able to project a friendly, outgoing personality.

Demonstrates ability to follow through on commitments. Demonstrates accuracy and attention to detail.

Able to stand for long periods of time. Able to lift 50 lbs. Regular, predictable attendance.

Ability to adjust to changes by creating a timely, logical, and executable new plan and carrying it out. Asking for assistance when necessary.

Willingness to execute calm, timely, and direct confrontation as necessary.
