Position: Meat Department Assistant Manager
Status: Full time Permanent
Reports to: Store Manager
Job Functions: Assist Meat Department Manager in overseeing the operation of the store’s Meat Department. The assistant manager is responsible for training, supervising and evaluating staff while fostering a team environment and meeting department objectives. The assistant manager is also a lead in customer service within the department and is responsible for handling complaints, ensuring satisfaction and maintaining quality service. The assistant manager also monitors department inventory, keeps supplies in stock and ensures products are fresh.
Responsibilities:
PURCHASING.
Place orders to ensure regular and adequate supply for specials.
Receive orders following established procedures. Obtain credit from suppliers as needed.
Ensure accurate up-to-date price labeling (or shelf tags) for department items. (Verify updated prices in scanning system & ensure accurate updated prices are given to Data Department).
MERCHANDISING
Supervise and participate in cutting, grinding, slicing, weighing, wrapping and labeling according to quality, quantity and product freshness and food safety and sanitation standards. Controls product shrinkage and inventory expenses through proper handling, cutting, trimming and wrapping techniques.
Help plan and maintain attractive, fully stocked, rotated (especially highly perishable items) and faced sections.
Ensure accurate, uniform, up-to-date signs as needed.
Participate in planning promotions and cross-merchandising.
Provide product information to customers and staff.
Provide assistance with special orders and provide prompt, friendly and helpful customer service.
DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT
Handle customer service complaints and answer customer comments.
Review financial reports (sales, labor, margin and turns) with supervisor and take corrective action as needed.
Ensure that unsellable items are returned or otherwise properly disposed of, following established procedures. Keep accurate shrinkage records.
Ensure that department areas (aisles, shelves, bins and storage areas) are in clean and orderly condition.
Act as store liaison with related regulatory agencies when department manager is absent (Weights & Measures, Health Department, etc.).
Maintain equipment in working order. Monitor cooler and freezer temperatures (where applicable) and follow established procedures for handling breakdowns. Advise Department Manager, Store Manager, & VP of Operations of equipment problems or needs.
Ensure all practices meet safe food handling and storage as specified by the health department and store.
SUPERVISOR
Interview, hire, train, coach, schedule, manage and supervise department staff. Foster a team environment.
Ensure staff is trained, follows and meets all food safety requirements as well as labor laws.
OTHER
Follow company policies and practice safety on the job.
Perform other tasks assigned by your Supervisor (Store Manager).
Participate in periodic inventory.
Propose new ideas for efficiency or products for the store.
Qualifications:
Experience in meat cutting, proper grinding, slicing, weighing, wrapping and labeling according to Health and Safety standards. Willingness and ability to learn and meet the changing demands of the job. Able to handle multiple demands. Demonstrates ability to follow through on goals & commitments. Accuracy and attention to detail. Experience supervising 5+ people, hiring, firing, and managing employees, including team building. Familiarity with the natural foods industry and purchasing experience. Experience serving the public. Ability to project a friendly, outgoing personality. Able to stand for long periods of time. Able to lift 50 lbs. Regular, predictable attendance. Strong writing and English skills. Ability to work well under pressure and strict deadlines.
