The Asphalt Equipment Operator with Grade Checking is responsible for operating a variety of heavy construction equipment while performing accurate grade checking to ensure projects meet required elevations, slopes, and specifications. This position requires a combination of equipment operation, site measurement, and quality control to support paving, grading, and earthwork projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Safely operate equipment such as excavators, loaders, graders, dozers, and rollers in paving and grading operations.
Perform grade checking using laser levels, GPS equipment, or manual methods to verify elevations and slopes.
Interpret grade stakes, blueprints, and construction plans to ensure compliance with project specifications.
Work closely with Foreman and survey teams to make grade adjustments and provide feedback on site conditions.
Perform daily inspections and routine maintenance of equipment in compliance with DOT and Cal/OSHA standards.
Load, move, and place materials (asphalt, base, aggregate, soil, etc.) accurately to grade.
Communicate clearly with ground crews and spotters to maintain safe and efficient operations.
Assist with general labor tasks when not actively operating equipment or checking grades.
Follow all traffic control, work zone, and safety requirements.
Qualifications:
Experience: Minimum 3 years of heavy equipment operating experience in paving, grading, or sitework. Grade checking experience required.
Licenses/Certifications:
o Valid California Driver’s License required; Class A CDL preferred.
o OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred.
o GPS machine control experience a plus.
Knowledge/Skills:
o Strong understanding of grades, slopes, elevations, and site layout.
o Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and survey stakes.
o Proficiency in using laser levels, GPS equipment, and measuring devices.
o Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
o Team-oriented with effective communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, and operate equipment for extended periods.
Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds as required.
Work outdoors in varying conditions, including heat, cold, dust, and uneven terrain.
Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, nights, and weekends as project needs demand.
Working Conditions:
This role is performed on active construction sites with exposure to moving equipment, traffic, and outdoor weather conditions. Strict compliance with PPE and safety policies is required.
