Shipping and Receiving Material Handling

Supports daily manufacturing by safely receiving, staging, moving, and shipping long, heavy steel components (e.g., rack beams, uprights, frames, accessories). This role requires skilled operation of forklifts and precise flatbed loading/securement to keep people safe and product damage-free while maintaining inventory accuracy and production flow.

Key Responsibilities

Inbound Receiving

Unload flatbeds and vans; verify counts and part IDs against packing slips/POs; inspect for damage or discrepancies.

Safe Handling of Long & Heavy Loads

Maintain exclusion zones; use standard hand signals; complete pre-shift equipment inspections and take unsafe equipment out of service.

Production Support

Deliver and stage materials to work cells by job priority; backhaul WIP/finished goods; keep lanes, laydown yards, and racks organized and clearly labeled (5S).

Outbound Shipping

Pick, pack, and build safe loads for LTL and flatbed: proper dunnage, stacking, banding, edge protection, and weather protection.

Inventory Control

Perform cycle counts and full counts; reconcile variances; keep real-time locations.

Report shortages, damage, and nonconformances promptly and help drive corrective actions.

Safety & Continuous Improvement

Qualifications (Required)

2+ years in manufacturing, steel service center, or heavy fabrication environment handling long/oversized steel or structural.

Proven skill operating forklifts with long loads.

Working knowledge of flatbed loading and securement (straps/chains, dunnage, edge protection, weight distribution).

Ability to read packing slips, POs, work orders.

Strong attention to detail; accurate counting, labeling, and documentation.

Basic math and measuring (tape to 1/16"); clear written/verbal communication.

Ability to lift 50+ lbs (team lifts for heavier pieces) and to stand, walk, bend, and climb on/off equipment throughout shift.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Familiarity with carrier requirements and best practices for flatbed securement and load protection.

Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

Working Conditions

Manufacturing floor, warehouse, and outdoor yard environments with exposure to loud machinery, steel handling, dust, and changing temperatures.

Frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, and operation of material-handling equipment; walking on concrete.

Required PPE: safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves, high-vis; additional PPE as tasks dictate.

Overtime and occasional Saturday work may be required to meet ship dates.
