Refrigeration Technician

Position Overview:

The Refrigeration Technician is responsible for performing skilled mechanical maintenance involving the inspection, repair, installation, and modification of refrigeration systems and related equipment. This role includes executing preventive maintenance and routine servicing to ensure optimal performance and safety standards. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of refrigeration systems and demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, particularly when documenting on-site findings and customer requirements. Strong follow-up capabilities and the ability to represent the company in a professional, courteous manner are essential.

Essential Job Functions:

Install and service cold storage doors to include entry, sectional/roll ups, and dock doors.

Inspect, repair, modify and install refrigeration equipment; including compressors, receivers, condensers, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves, ports, manifolds and capillary tubes.

Conduct regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration equipment and make necessary adjustments or repairs; service and repair evaporative coolers, condensing units, and racks.

Repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, fan controls, relays, filters, motor controls, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic valves.

Operate a variety of hand and power tools, brazing torch, vacuum pump, test equipment utilized in the trade and a motor vehicle; maintain equipment in effective and safe working condition; maintain parts and tool inventory.

Perform skilled electrical maintenance work in the repair, installation and alteration of refrigeration equipment, components, timers, motors and wiring systems as needed.

Test and examine equipment operations, observing meter and pressure gauges; conduct oil quality test when needed.

Lubricate and pack refrigeration motors, pumps, fans, and other equipment.

Install and calibrate systems; install copper tubing and repair pipes and tubing as necessary; test joints and insulate pipes of refrigeration systems; install pressure and temperature safety valves.

Install, rebuild, replace or repair fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets and other equipment as necessary.

Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards.

Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing publications.

Requirements:

Mechanical and Electrical problem-solving ability.

Standard practices of the refrigeration trade.

Theory of refrigeration systems.

Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of refrigeration systems.

Applicable building codes, ordinances and regulations of State and local authorities pertaining to refrigeration.

Manual and electrical tools and equipment applicable to the refrigeration trade.

Brazing and soldering techniques.

Ability to read and understand drawings, plans and manufacturer submittals.

Ability to read a tape measure.

Health and safety regulations.

Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Basic record keeping techniques.

Perform skilled mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities.

Calibrate systems.

Perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.

Diagnose defects, and install, repair and maintain refrigeration units.

Follow oral and written instructions.

Operate specialized machinery, equipment and tools utilized in the repair, installation and maintenance of refrigeration systems.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Work cooperatively with others.

Available to travel, including out-of-state assignments, and availability to work on an on-call basis as needed

Physical Requirements:

Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of up to 50lbs.

Have the ability to stand and walk for up to 8 (or more) hours a day.

Some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting and crawling.

Some tasks require the ability to perceive sounds and visual cues or signals.

Required to climb and stand on ladders, sometimes for extended periods of time

Required to work with tools while reaching above your head for extended periods of time

(Commute/travel as needed)

Environmental Exposures:

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to hazardous materials/chemicals, odors, fumes, temperature, weather, noise extremes, air pollutants/air quality and traffic hazards.
