Join the Environmental Resources Division of the Sonoma County Water Agency (Sonoma Water) as a Riparian Habitat Technician I - Extra-Help. Multiple positions available.

Sonoma Water is hiring several temporary, extra-help Riparian Habitat Technicians. Starting pay will be $24.34/hour. Positions will start in May 2021.

Riparian Habitat Technicians provide field and office support to environmental and maintenance staff during implementation of flood control and fire fuel reduction maintenance priorities at managed facilities. Depending upon assignment, positions may also provide vegetation and sediment management field support in the Stream Maintenance Program. All assignments involve predominately outdoor work including travel by vehicle, or on foot, to collect data regarding aquatic, riparian, and terrestrial habitats, survey for associated wildlife and assist maintenance staff with on-site field work.

Typical duties and responsibilities include:Surveying and characterizing biotic and abiotic conditions and conducting pre-construction surveys for special-status plant and animal species, including nesting birds

Implementing and documenting best management practices with field crews to conduct vegetation and sediment management along stream channels to support flood control and fire reduction strategies

Identifying significant aquatic and terrestrial features for management treatments

Developing, implementing, and monitoring site restoration plans

Assisting in the preparation of technical reportsThe ideal candidates will possess:Education and experience related to implementing resource conservation techniques for environmentally sensitive construction projects

Experience working with field crews conducting site management to support flood control, fire fuel reduction, landscape management, or similar activities while implementing practices to conserve natural resources

A working knowledge of biological and ecological concepts and methods used in natural resources management

One year of experience working with riparian-related management programsEXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT

Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.
