This OpportunityWSP is seeking an environmental scientist specializing in stormwater compliance to join our team in Oakland, CA. Our Oakland office, and Southwest Region as a whole, is a wide-spectrum workplace. Our clients span the military, municipalities, and commercial entities both local and international. Our projects solve real-world environmental and infrastructure problems. We are passionate about developing optimized, highly usable solutions and are looking for another innovator to join our team.Working as part of our storm water team, the position requires assisting clients with various stormwater compliance tasks including assessing best management practices (BMPs), stormwater monitoring, reviewing water quality data, completing site evaluations, and preparing compliance documentation. Candidate must display independent judgement as well as excellent communication and critical thinking skills. Candidate must have familiarity with environmental and stormwater quality industry standards and proficiency in applying knowledge of stormwater regulations to various sites.This position offers the opportunity for growth and development. Our team in Oakland works with multiple clients on a wide range of National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) -related projects, providing multiple opportunities to work with various clients.Your Impact

Conduct compliance evaluations at commercial and industrial sites and assist with reviewing staff inspection reports.

Determine well-defined data collection methods for stormwater and surface water compliance projects.

Evaluate effectiveness of pollutant control measures.

Prepare compliance reports for a wide range of National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)-related projects including exceedance response actions (ERA) reports, monitoring reports, inspection reports, and other client deliverables.

Assist with project coordination of schedules and cost-estimates,

Assist with overseeing and working with cross-functional teams in executing project work.

Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, reporting, and record compliance and retention.

Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses and conduct training classes to support NPDES-related projects.

Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to address, prevent, control, or restore environmental problems.

Oversee and perform sampling equipment and analytical laboratory purchase orders with WSP approved vendors.

Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).

Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner applying knowledge of stormwater regulations and critical thinking skills.

Conduct research as appropriate and assist with proposal development to win work.

Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You AreRequired Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related life sciences field.

3 to 5 years of experience working as an environmental scientist and completing environmental surveys, fieldwork, habitat and impact assessments, and/or construction monitoring.

Demonstrated experience implementing NPDES-related compliance projects including the projects covered under the Construction General Permit, Industrial General Permit, and MS4 Permit.

Appropriate certifications for QISP, QSD, QSP, CPESC, CPSWQ, CESSWI, CISEC, and/or Professional Engineer.

Working knowledge and experience with State and Federal protection regulations, guidelines, and consulting processes pertaining to the environmental projects.

Familiarity with local, state, and federal permitting agencies.

Proficient in using weather models (deterministic, probabilistic and high resolution) through the National Weather Service

Demonstrated experience contributing to technical reports, assisting with environmental permitting, and conducting field work.

Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.

Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.

Proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.

Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most effective solutions to accomplish objectives of assigned projects.

Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree is preferred.

40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred. 40 HAZWOPER will be provided if you don’t have the training.

Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
