Job description:
Key Responsibilities
A grinding machinist's daily tasks involve a combination of machine operation, quality control, and maintenance.
Machine Operation & Setup: Set up and operate various grinding machines, including surface, cylindrical, and centerless grinders. This includes selecting the correct grinding wheels, work-holding devices, and machine settings (e.g., speed, feed rate) based on material type and blueprint specifications.
Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to understand part dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish requirements.
Precision Measurement: Use a variety of precision measuring instruments, such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges, to inspect parts during and after the grinding process, ensuring they meet the specified tolerances.
Quality Control: Monitor the grinding process to detect any malfunctions or deviations from specifications. Adjust machine controls as needed and conduct quality checks to ensure the finished product meets high standards.
Maintenance: Perform routine preventative maintenance on grinding equipment, troubleshoot minor malfunctions, and keep the work area clean and organized to ensure a safe and efficient workspace.
Safety: Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Required Skills & Qualifications To excel as a grinding machinist, one must possess a specific set of technical and personal skills.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency with Grinding Machines: Experience with various types of manual and CNC grinding machines.
Math and Measurement: Strong mathematical skills and the ability to use precision measuring tools with a high degree of accuracy.
Blueprint Reading: The ability to read and understand complex technical drawings is essential.
Knowledge of Materials: A solid understanding of different metal types and their properties, as well as the appropriate grinding techniques for each.
CNC Knowledge (if applicable): For modern shops, knowledge of CNC programming (e.g., G-code) and operation is highly valued.
Qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent is typically the minimum requirement.
Vocational training, a technical degree in machining, or a formal apprenticeship is often preferred.
Proven experience as a metal grinder or in a similar manufacturing role.
Personal Attributes:
Attention to Detail: The ability to focus on minute details is critical for achieving tight tolerances.
Manual Dexterity: Excellent hand-eye coordination is required for operating and controlling grinding tools.
Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to troubleshoot issues and find solutions when a part is not meeting specifications.
Safety Consciousness: A strong commitment to following safety procedures to prevent accidents in a potentially hazardous environment.
