Some essential functions include: managing subordinate supervisors and craft workers who are involved in a wide range of technical work maintaining heavy equipment; coordinating the fabrication, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of mechanical equipment; preparing specifications for the purchase of new equipment or machinery; preparing written reports; managing the expenditure of funds; monitoring work performed by outside contractors; carrying out safety requirements and procedures; interacting with departmental personnel, contractors and others pertaining to the fabrication, maintenance and repair activities; and assisting subordinates in professional development.The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Coordinates with appropriate supervisors and managers in the fabrication, maintenance, and repair of a variety of heavy mechanical equipment including hydroelectric power houses, valve houses, dams, and waterways.

Initiates work clearances, defines clearance boundaries, and approves switching orders.

Plans and directs the maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles, off-road portable machines, heavy equipment, hydroelectric power houses, valve houses, dams, and waterways.

Directs shop and field-activities in the fabrication and machining of parts, tools, and equipment needed for maintenance and repair activities.

Prepares specifications for the purchase of new equipment or machinery and may review the fabrication process and oversee the installation of equipment in order to ensure products meet specifications.

Prepares various written reports and/or directs and monitors the preparation of various written reports such as performance evaluations, maintenance progress activities, shop operations, vehicle and machinery repairs, material and supply requisitions and inventory, and work orders.

Monitors alteration and repair work performed by outside Contractors to ensure that work is accomplished in accordance with contracts and specifications.

Ensure legal and regulatory compliance, proper handling of hazardous materials, shop safety; conducts related shop inspections, safety meetings and training.

Establishes and maintains contact with departmental personnel, representatives of other divisions/ departments, contractors, general public, etc., to keep them advised and informed of the department's activities; represents the department at various meetings.

Supervises subordinate staff; provides mentorship and training; performs personnel management functions; conducts and prepares performance evaluations, provides coaching and guidance, and implements corrective disciplinary measures.

Performs related duties as required within the scope of the classification 7126 Mechanical Shop and Equipment Superintendent.

If you are interested in this job, we are looking for people that have the following minimum qualifications:Education:

Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).AND

Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license.

Experience:

Three (3) years of verifiable supervisory experience supervising the activities of crafts persons in a machine shop engaged in the maintenance and repair of heavy mechanical equipment such as hydroelectric power houses, valve houses, dams, and waterways.

Experience Substitution:Three (3) years of verifiable supervisory experience supervising the activities of crafts persons in which major duties were disassembling, repairing, overhauling, and installing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic assemblies in heavy duty vehicles and off-road equipment including the use of machine tools such as valve refacers, hydraulic and drill presses, lathes, and grinders.Selection Procedures:After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following: Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): (Weight: Qualifying)Candidates will be required to complete a MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.Supplemental Questionnaire Examination: (Weight: 100%)Candidates who meet minimum qualifications will be invited via a separate link to complete the Supplemental Questionnaire Examination. The purpose of the Supplemental Questionnaire Examination is to evaluate the experience, knowledge, skills and abilities that candidates possess in job-related areas, which have been identified as critical for this position and include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of heavy-duty mechanics, machinery, and equipment: Valves, generators, turbines, gearboxes, compressors, engines, etc. for plant equipment, assembles/control systems, heavy duty vehicles, etc.; Knowledge of safety practices and procedures (e.g., OSHA) related to the machine/maintenance work; Problem Solve: Ability to analyze and troubleshoot machinery/mechanical problems; Supervision: Ability to assign and supervise work of subordinates, address and handle issues as needed.Applicants will be given a deadline to return the Supplemental Questionnaire Examination. Those who do not respond by the established deadline will not be eligible to continue in the examination process and will not be added to the eligibility list resulting from this process. All applicants’ responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire Examination are subject to verification.A passing score must be achieved on the Supplemental Questionnaire Examination in order to continue in the selection process and be placed on the eligible list. Candidates will be placed on the eligible list in rank order according to their final score.
