We perform emergency-repair services twenty-four (24) hours a day to ensure that Police, Fire, and other Public Safety operations are fully functional; and oversee paving and street repair work, including patch paving and filling potholes, as well sewer repair, which includes brickwork.Public Works currently has a vacancy for a Roofer position within the Bureau of Building and Street Repair.Under general direction, as a member of a roofing crew, you will maintain, repair, and reroof a variety of roofs and structures.Important and Essential Duties:Your duties as a Roofer may include, but are not limited to the following:

Maintaining, repairing, and reroofing a variety of roofs by replacing broken slate, tile, or shingle, applying additional layers of cap sheet over a built-up roof, removing old cap sheet/felt, and applying modified bitumen and one-ply systems.

Cleaning,preparingroof surfaces, performingdemolition/removal,and replacingwith new roofing material when necessary.

Safely lifting and handling roofing materials such as asphalt, gravel, ply sheets, torch on, and mineral surfaced cap sheets with a variety of hand tools such as axes, razor knives, tin snips, and flat bars.

Quartering asphalt plugs with an axe, placing asphalt in the kettle, and transporting hot asphalt in service buckets to designated areas.

Assembling, operating, and maintaining equipment in a safe manner such as hoists, cranes, asphalt kettles, ladders, brackets, planks, and fall protection.

Securing equipment to ensure safety and prevent damage to buildings, equipment, and supplies or injury to personnel.

Waterproofing floors, bathrooms, showers, concrete slabs, planter boxes, and pilings to achieve a watertight seal.

Inspectingexisting roof surfaces (membranes, tile, etc.) for roof or systems failure as part of an ongoing preventive maintenance program.

Driving departmental vehicles to work sites and transporting equipment and supplies.

May operate a forklift, boom, or scissor lift.

Working Conditions:Nature of the work requires performance of heavy work such as lifting, carrying, and moving tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 110 pounds for distances up to 100 feet; constant bending, reaching, pulling, climbing, balancing, squatting, and crawling, at considerable heights and pitches often in adverse weather conditions. And also, working in a confined space, jail or hospital may be required.Minimum Qualifications:Education:Completion of a recognized three and a half (3.5) years (42-months) Roofer apprenticeship program.Experience:Three and a half (3.5) years of experience as a journey-level Roofer.License and Certification:Possession of a valid Class C driver's license.Substitution:Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENTValid Driver’s License:Applicantsmustpossess a valid State of Californiadriver’s license withno restrictionsthat would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.Verification:Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying education and experience at any point during the recruitment and selection process.
