The successful candidate will become part of a growing department building computational linguistics expertise, and would have the opportunity to teach courses in computational linguistics and general linguistics.SJSU is the only CSU campus in northern California with a dedicated linguistics department, founded in 1991. Situated in the Bay Area—among the most diverse regions in the world—the Department is committed to fostering understandings of language structure and use in the context of an increasingly multicultural and technological society. The Department is further dedicated to exploring societal inequities, how language contributes to those, and how such inequities may be alleviated through research, scholarship, and practice. In collaboration with the Department of Computer Science, the Department also offers a BS degree in computer science and linguistics. Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related field by the time of appointment

Demonstrated ability to conduct research in computational linguistics

Demonstrated ability to teach courses in linguistics at the undergraduate level and courses in computational linguistics at both undergraduate and graduate levels

Strong commitment to teamwork and collegiality

Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:

Research experience in:

developing and/or evaluating language resources

modeling language acquisition and/or change

building language education applications

Industry experience related to natural language processing, artificial intelligence, and/or machine learning

Ability to seek and secure grant funding

Commitment to collaboration within and across institutional contexts

Key Responsibilities

Teach courses in linguistics, especially in computational linguistics, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, in addition to other linguistics and general education courses as needed

Be actively engaged in scholarly activities as evidenced by seeking grants, presenting professional papers, and publishing peer-reviewed articles

Advise undergraduate and graduate students and assist with program coordination and development

The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.

Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).

The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
