Research Scientist OR Medical Device Engineer

Vacancy expired!

Location: LOCALS ONLY – Job will be mostly remote, but candidate needs to live local to San Jose, CA area – just in case of emergency. Occasionally they may need to come onsite to reboot the main computer, test on the actual instrument, etc. Also

possibility of conversion down the road, hence the heavy emphasis on locals. For now this is a 12 month contract, but client has historically converted several of our long-term ks in the past so this is always on the table.

Length: 12 months + extension or conversion to full-time

Background Required

Title: Research Scientist or Medical Device Engineer

Process: 2 round interview – first round phone screen with hiring manager and his team lead for 60 minutes (30 minutes each), second round will be virtual meeting (Skype, Teams, Zoom, etc.) with hiring manager and 4-5 other team members (leads, engineers, etc.) Second round should be about 2.5 to 3 hours, 30 minutes with each party.

Scope: Client is looking for an R&D Med Device Engineer/Research Scientist candidate that has had heavy experience working on complex medical devices or instruments. Client has recently hired a Manual SW Tester from us and their environment involves very complex medical devices that require significant ramp up before proficient testing can be done – hence the focus for this role is on someone who has worked in a similarly complex environment and has a hands-on understanding of complicated medical devices. Client’s group is responsible for testing SW in real customer workflows – and their customers are doctors and scientists. Thus, client said

ideal candidate would have a PhD in one of the following four majors: cellular biology, molecular biology, hematology, or biochemistry – these are the degrees that are most relevant. If the candidate has a degree in this plus 2-3 years’ experience at some sort of Life Sciences, Biotech, or Medical Device company – they will likely have significant exposure to similarly complex tools and instruments and would ramp up in client’s environment fastest. We are not seeking Research Scientists or Medical Device engineers with a Mechanical, hardware, or electrical degree/background.
Manager said that when he reads the publications of these candidates, he will have a strong sense of how much relevant experience they have had and will be able to assess how quickly they would integrate into this current environment. For example, he recently hired a PhD candidate with some experience at Roche labs who ramped up very quickly. Not concerned at all with someone who has little or even NO experience with manual SW testing, as this can be learned and trained.

Duties:
Learn client’s complex medical devices and subsystems, work with the in-house manual testers to help develop SW testing on these devices. Client will eventually train candidate on assisting with writing Manual SW tests.

Necessary Skills:
-Masters or PhD (highly preferred) in cellular biology, molecular biology, immunology, hematology, or biochemistry
-2-3 years’ work experience in medical device or life sciences companies
-Experience with complex medical devices and instruments

Desired Skills:
-If candidate performed any Manual SW testing at any of their experiences, this is nice to have, but not at all mandatory.
