Aerospace Engineer – Simulation and Modeling (Level 2)Empirical Systems Aerospace, Inc. (ESAero) is seeking a full-time Aerospace Engineer - Simulation and Modeling (Level 2) to join our team in San Luis Obispo, CA. The aerospace engineer will assist in the multi-functional product development of new aircraft design and control systems while collaborating with other engineering disciplines and project personnel.This position is fully on-site at ESAero in San Luis Obispo, CA  Aerospace Engineer – Simulation and Modeling (Level 2)Responsibilities and Duties:

Design and integration of flight dynamics models.

Develop, test, and implement custom software-based simulation tools.

Support development of aircraft guidance, navigation, and control systems.

Support testing of autonomous flight vehicles.

Process and review flight data, debug complex flight controller issues, and produce test reports.

Perform analysis, simulation, and engineering trade studies to support design decisions.

Clearly communicate engineering ideas, progress, and results using written reports and oral presentations to supervisors, project managers, and customers.

Collaborate with team members to accomplish project goals in a timely fashion.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering or equivalent.

3+ years of relevant engineering experience.

Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink.

Experience with nonlinear 6 degree of freedom (6DoF) flight simulators.

Familiarity with UNIX/Linux and Windows operating systems.

Experience using programming version control software such as Git.

Fundamental understanding of related disciplines including aircraft stability & control, aircraft performance, flight controllers, microcontrollers, systems engineering, computational optimization, etc.

Experience with batch and/or Monte Carlo simulation.

Experience with trim/numerical linearization.

Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Strong writing & presentation skills.

Willing to relocate to San Luis Obispo, CA.

US Citizenship required.

Desirable Qualifications and Skills:

Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering or equivalent and/or 5+ years of experience.

Experience with Python, VBA, C, and/or other coding languages.

Experience with RC aircraft and/or open-source autopilot software (i.e. PX4, ArduPilot).

Experience with state estimators and inertial navigation systems.

Experience with frequency domain analysis, bode diagrams, and transfer functions.

Experience with system identification techniques.

Familiarity with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) and test-based development.

Familiarity with the design of aircraft and common aircraft systems.

Familiarity with requirements capture at the aircraft and/or systems level.

Familiarity with civil and military regulations for fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft.

Familiarity with electric vertical takeoff / landing (eVTOL) design concepts.

Familiarity with the urban air mobility (UAM) market space.

Familiarity with OpenVSP / VSPAERO, XFOIL, XROTOR, AVL, etc
