Looking for a female, live-in support person, for a 45 year old, creative & independent woman who has Down syndrome.
The ideal candidate would be someone who has/is:
strong negotiating skills
experience dealing with challenging (nonviolent) behaviors
energetic and social, liking to go to movie, festivals, volunteer, etc.
respectful of differences
who thinks outside the box
is willing to learn
This position is similar to a special education teacher/teaching assistant. Candidate needs to be willing to apply behavioral techniques to develop and keep up the level of independence of the client. Ongoing training and support will be provided.
The housemate would be expected to provide:
socialization (community events, game nights, etc.)
guidance (in making appropriate choices)
provide positive feedback & consequences as needed
share the housework & cooking
assist with errands (grocery shopping, Costco, etc.)
assist with simple hygiene (cutting nails, putting RX oil in hair)
accompany to some doctor appointments & report back to family
schedule/supervise the community support staff
other duties as needed
Typical weekly hours:
M-F 5pm to 7am next day
Saturday 1pm to 7am Sunday
Sunday 1pm to 7am Monday
Community staff allows for more time off as needed as long as the shift is filled.
Flexibility with holidays and longer vacations can be discussed and arranged with family & community staff.
You would be sharing a two bedroom, two bath, home in the Santa Barbara area.
One year commitment a must (minimum)
Must have a car, insurance and good driving record (mileage is reimbursed)
Having a day job, or school, is fine, should be home most evenings
No pets
No school age children or live-in significant others
Room is furnished
