SUMMARY: Immediate opening at Montecito Union Elementary School.

Under the supervision of credentialed school nurse or administrator, provide support for diabetic student and/or other health concerns. Stay with assigned students during class and assist in blood sugar monitoring and meal consumption plan. Hours M-F 8 a.m.- 3:15 p.m. Temporary Assignment - Immediate opening until approximately end of November

Job Description

Basic Function

Under the supervision (direct or indirect) of a credentialed school nurse, Principal or other Administrator, provide a variety of nursing and specialized health care, administer first aid and medications to students, and perform related duties as assigned.

Supervision

Receive general supervision from a School Nurse and assigned administrator.

Essential Functions and Representative Duties: - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Provide specialized health care procedures for students following an Individualized School Health Care Plan (ISHCP) that has been developed by the school nurse. Specialized care may include, but is not limited to diabetic testing and administration of medication, gastric tube feeding, catheterization, tracheostomy care, suctioning, oxygen administration, nebulizer treatment, and intravenous medication and infusion, and ostomy procedures.

Under supervision and according to established guidelines, provide basic assessment, prescribed treatment, and evaluation of students with diabetes; perform calculations of insulin dosages according to regular and sliding scale adjustments and administer insulin.

Administer medications according to established guidelines, including, but not limited to, glucagons, glucose gel, inhalers, diastat, and epi-pens.

Assess illness and injuries and apply appropriate first aid as needed; check for head lice, skin abnormalities, and other conditions

Administer first aid and CPR as required, use AED as necessary

Assist students with disabilities in activities of daily function such as, but not limited to, feeding, toileting, exercise, and positioning.

Provide emergency care in situations such as anaphylactic shock, cardiopulmonary distress, respiratory distress, insulin reactions, hypoglycemic reactions, seizures, and other medical emergencies.

Administer prescribed medications as ordered by a physician following the Nurse Practice Act and other state and federal regulations, and monitor for any unexpected, abnormal or allergic reactions to medications.

Assist the School Nurse during health screenings, monitoring and notification of student health issues, and reviewing emergency forms for completion and follow-up.

Maintain student medical records and files; prepare routine reports related to completion of health procedures, medications administered, and assigned activities.

Communicate with teacher, school nurse, staff, administrators, and parents in order to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.

Monitor students with specialized health care needs during bus transport from home to school, from school to home, and on field trips as required.

As directed by the School Nurse, review student immunization and health records and assist families to assure compliance with immunization laws.

Effectively create and maintain records, and accurately compile and complete required reports.

Observe health and safety regulations.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others while using interpersonal skills of tact, patience, compassion and courtesy.

Participate in field trips and supervise students as assigned.

Record daily health procedures per established protocols including computerized health care system.

Assist the classroom teacher as needed and as time allows during down time, and/or when assigned student/s are/is not at school.

Assist in the health office or related assignments as time allows during down time, and or/when assigned student is not at school.

Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Other Requirements

Physical Abilities: Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; seeing to read a variety of materials; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to store or retrieve materials; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to reach and store supplies and equipment.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

The position requires the ability to see for purposes of performing essential job functions, driving a car, observing students, and reading student records and other printed matter; understand speech at normal levels in person and on the telephone; communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person and on the telephone; use all extremities with sufficient manual dexterity to perform duties and operate specialized equipment; occasionally lift/carry supplies and printed materials weighing up to 35 pounds; and occasionally lift (with assistance), move, and position students.

The duties are performed in a classroom and health office working environment subject to bending, crouching, sitting on the floor, and kneeling to interact with students, pushing/pulling equipment, reaching in all directions, exposure to and contact with blood borne pathogens, and exposure to communicable diseases.

Qualifications

Experience/Training: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would include graduation from high school, completion of an accredited Vocational Nursing Program, and experience working with students with medical conditions.

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California driver license and evidence of insurability, a current California Vocational Nurse License, issued by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians, or LPN, or RN license or certificate and current CPR/First Aid certificate.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Knowledge of child/adolescent development; medication management for children and adolescents; specialized health care procedures and crisis intervention techniques; universal precautions in handling blood or body fluids; and record keeping and report preparation techniques.

Ability to relate effectively with students who have special needs and various emotional and physical disabilities; remain calm and respond appropriately in stressful or emergency situations; maintain confidentiality of work; operate a computer; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents, community agencies, and others contacted in the course of work; and prepare reports and maintain records.

Provide specialized health care procedures, recognize the need to provide for the personal privacy and dignity of medically fragile children, recognize and report safety hazards, work independently.

Understand and follow oral and written directions, analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Computer use proficiency including using e-mail, computerized health assessment programs, Word, Internet for work related research or tasks.
