Summary of Job Details

Under the direction of the Production Manager, the Costume Shop Manager oversees all costumes, make-up, hair, millinery, and costume crafts for the department's 8-9 yearly main stage productions including both theater and dance. Work includes extensive collaboration and consultation with faculty and guest costume designers to ensure designs are successfully translated, realized, and executed as fully as possible. Creates, oversees, and manages build and labor schedules for each production. Coordinates the scheduling of all fittings. Purchases general shop and show specific materials and supplies. Manages budgets for general shop area, labor, and individual productions. Hires and supervises career, limited, and student employees. Recruits and coordinates the scheduling, training, and supervision of student production wardrobe crews for main stage shows. Evaluates these student crews for grading purposes. Assists in the area of costume construction and alteration as time permits including sewing, cutting, draping, dyeing, millinery, and costume crafts. In addition to main stage related duties, helps to facilitate support for the costume needs of multiple classroom-related productions, as resources allow. Oversees costume rentals and costume shop facilities. Teaches costume practicum labs and evaluates their work for grading purposes. May oversee student design assistants assigned to productions, in coordination with faculty designer. Maintains costume area equipment and inventory. Responsible for use of safe practices in the costume areas.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Minimum of 1 year of managing staff, schedules and budget.

Minimum of 4 years of professional work in theatrical/performing arts environment.

Minimum of 4 years in wardrobe, costuming, or styling within live events, theater, or entertainment industries.

Knowledge of managing staff, and functioning in a leadership role.

Strong time-management and organizational skills.

Ability to meet tight deadlines.

Proficiency in hand and machine sewing techniques.

Strong organizational skills to maintain an efficient wardrobe area.

Critical attention to detail, ensuring high-quality costume preparation and maintenance.

Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Special Conditions of Employment

Schedule frequently includes weeknights and weekends.

Satisfactory conviction history background check.
