The Citywide Art Teacher position provides high quality arts programming at the JCCSF’s partner afterschool and summer programming sites. This program provides essential arts education to elementary students at public and charter schools within San Francisco. These programs serve the city’s diverse population and are provided to participants free of charge.

During the school year (August – May), Citywide Art Teachers provide art classes at afterschool programs in the afternoon and early evening. During the summer session (June – July), instruction is provided at summer school locations during normal business hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Teach an average of 7 art programs per week at partner San Francisco elementary afterschool and summer school sites.

Design at least 3 different visual arts curricula.

Transport self and program materials between program sites.

Work with the Citywide Program Manager and other Citywide staff on curriculum planning, scheduling, and grant reporting.

Collaborate with partner site program staff regarding access, attendance, and shared responsibilities.

Create a safe, joyful, and stimulating atmosphere for participants.

Display developmentally appropriate child–adult interactions.

Monitor children’s hygiene, health, and emotional well-being.

Participate in regular meetings with the Youth Recreation Manager and in staff trainings with other Citywide staff.

REQUIREMENTS

At least two years’ experience working with school-age children.

Knowledge of and ability to teach visual art to elementary-age children.

Ability to work independently offsite with minimal supervision.

Associate degree or higher, or equivalent experience (arts, education, child development, or ECE preferred).

Experience working within a framework of social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and ability to incorporate these principles into programs.

Reliable means of transportation (personal vehicle or public transit).

Proficiency in languages other than English — such as Mandarin, Spanish, or Cantonese — is a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position works primarily offsite at partner afterschool and summer programs at San Francisco public and charter school sites, with some hours worked from home or at the JCCSF as needed. Work takes place under a variety of conditions and requires travel between sites (eligible travel expenses reimbursed). This position regularly works with elementary-aged children (5–12). Programming is primarily in English, with some bilingual programming at certain sites.

STATUS

Benefited, non-exempt position

HOURS / SCHEDULE

Up to 26 hours/week for 46 weeks.

During SFUSD breaks, a limited number of prep/training days may be available; all other break days are unpaid unless using vacation hours. Closures include:

Thanksgiving break (fourth week of November)

Winter break (last week of December + first week of January)

Spring break (one week between late March–early April)

Summer break (3 weeks between late July–mid August)

Typical Schedule:

Monday–Friday

1:00–6:00 pm (September–May)

10:00 am–3:00 pm (June–July)

Actual schedule may vary by session.

Additional hours may be required for professional development, trainings, or special events.
