Vacancy expired!

Are you tutor with at least two years of professional teaching or tutoring experience?

In-person positions available at $43 an hour.

This position will be a good fit for you if …

1. You love literature and poetry.

Here is a comment from a tutor with a Ph.D. who has been with the company for over a decade: “I do not have the luxury of teaching either literature or poetry at my full-time job. I love sharing the beauty of language and the significance of meaning that can be different depending when you read something. What was powerful at 16 is still powerful now but in a completely different way. I love to introduce students to beloved characters, so they can experience Anne's, Dorothy's, Tom's, and Jim's problems and joys. I like to explain what is going on historically, so the students understand the context of the literature and don't assume that life as we know it was always there.”

2. You love kids—at least for a hour at a time. :) Our kids stay in our program for a long time and are typically on their best behavior. You don't have to deal with tantrums or tears.

3. You love grammar. You love the rules and the exceptions. You want to foster an appreciation of it.

Here’s what current tutors say about working for IYE:

1. “The company cares about employees and clients. The company does not treat everyone as interchangeable or as a stereotype. The owner respects all of us. The company is serious about safety of clients and employees.”

2. “I like that the company uses a proprietary curriculum. The curriculum is well thought out. The owner, who created the curriculum, is a Stanford graduate. He takes suggestions and is willing to let the tutors be somewhat independent based on their own strengths and the needs of the individual student. Also, our curriculum changes and improves over time.”

Another tutor comment: “I can come up with my own exercises and questions or I can rely on IYE's. If I am a new tutor, I could simply start. I would not have to spend hours looking for vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension exercises or texts. IYE provides them.”

4. The work is part time or full time.

A comment from one of the current-tutors: “I can work more or less if and when I want. Also, it is something I can do once I retire from my full-time job. I can also teach in person or online. I can fit the work into my schedule.”

5. The job pays well.

A case study: “I teach at IYE, on average, 11 hours a week during the school year. These hours plus more during the summer and over winter break account for a third of my income. This fact always astonishes my friends at a local university who ask why I do something so low as tutoring. This extra money allows me to live a middle-class lifestyle. I can buy a car, go on vacation, and go out to eat without too much hardship.”
