About Onsen
Onsen is a Japanese inspired bathhouse and restaurant in the Tenderloin where guests unwind in our communal bath before sitting down to a set menu dinner. We are creating a space that feels like a third place for locals and visitors to relax, gather, and enjoy an experience that is both thoughtful and welcoming. We are looking for a talented cook who is excited to help craft seasonal menus that pair with sake, tea, and beer.
The Role
We are looking for a cook who thrives in a small, focused kitchen and enjoys working with quality ingredients. This is a hands on position for someone who wants to contribute to a restaurant inspired by Japanese traditions but rooted in California seasonality.
Responsibilities
Support menu design and execution that complements the bathhouse experience
Help prepare menus for private dining events and special dinners
Assist with training and supporting a small kitchen team
Take part in ordering, prep, service, inventory, and sanitation
Maintain consistency, food quality, and thoughtful presentation
Build positive relationships with local purveyors
Work closely with ownership and the front of house to create a smooth guest experience
Maintain health and safety standards
Qualifications
Experience as a strong line cook or sous chef
Familiarity with Japanese flavors and techniques with an interest in California produce and global ingredients
Strong organization and communication skills
Comfort in an intimate service environment
Interest in budgeting, food cost awareness, and smart sourcing
Commitment to sustainability, hospitality, and a calm, respectful kitchen culture
