We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Land/Property Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of a 350-acre ranch in the scenic Napa Valley. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in defensible space, equipment operation, and livestock care. The primary focus of this position (approximately 80% of the time) will actively creating and maintaining defensible space, including tree felling, limbing, chipping, and brush removal. The remaining time will be divided between livestock management (10%) and vendor coordination/property operations (10%). This is a hands-on position that requires a strong work ethic, experience with forestry equipment, and a deep understanding of fire safety principles.
Responsibilities
Fire Defensible Space Management (80%):
- Implement and execute defensible space plans according to established guidelines and regulations.
- Operate and maintain chainsaws, chippers, and other forestry equipment to fell trees, remove limbs, clear brush, and create defensible space around structures and critical areas.
- Perform all aspects of tree felling, including assessing hazards, planning cuts, and safely dropping trees.
- Process felled trees into manageable chips and dispose of debris according to best practices for fire safety.
- Maintain and sharpen chainsaws and other equipment, ensuring they are in safe working condition.
- Monitor vegetation growth and proactively address potential fire hazards.
- Work independently to achieve defensible space goals.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations related to forestry work and fire safety.
Livestock Management (10%):
- Assist with daily care of goats and sheep (e.g., feeding, watering, checking health).
- Move and maintain fences for the herd.
- Monitor livestock behavior and report any concerns.
- Assist with basic livestock handling and veterinary care as needed.
Vendor Coordination and Property Operations (10%):
- Coordinate with vendors for services such as equipment maintenance, waste removal, and other property needs.
- Assist with general property maintenance tasks as needed.
- Monitor property for potential hazards and report issues.
- Maintain records related to defensible space activities, livestock management, and vendor interactions.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in forestry work, including chainsaw operation, tree felling, limbing, and chipping.
- Basic handyman skills including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general repairs.
- Strong understanding of fire defensible space principles and best practices.
- Ability to operate and maintain various types of forestry equipment (e.g., chainsaws, chippers, brush hogs).
- Physical ability to perform strenuous labor in outdoor environments, including lifting, carrying, and working in various weather conditions.
- Experience with livestock handling and basic care is a plus.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong work ethic and commitment to safety.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills (proficient English and Spanish is preferred).
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Wildland Firefighter Type 2 certification or equivalent.
- Knowledge of local fire regulations and ordinances.
- Experience with bike trail maintenance.
- Familiarity with irrigation systems and landscaping.
- Basic knowledge of livestock care and grazing management.
