The department includes operating budgets of over $54 million, manages a project portfolio of approximately $950 million, and employs over 370 full-time staff to carry forth the duties necessary for the campus' development and operation.More information can be found at: https://physicalplant.ucsc.edu/JOB SUMMARYUnder the general supervision of the Resource Recovery Superintendent, the Zero Waste Technician operates campus resource recovery vehicles for the completion of route pickups on a regular weekly schedule as part of the Grounds Resource Recovery operations. The incumbent operates with a primary focus on zero waste initiatives and the roll-out of a campus-wide compost collection program and is expected to follow oral and written instructions and safely and courteously complete work assignments. Acting in conjunction with the Resource Recovery Superintendent, the Zero Waste Technician logs materials collected and performs computer data entry as required. This incumbent works both with or without the assistance of other staff and acts as field lead providing instruction to student staff. The Zero Waste Technician also helps educate the campus community on various campus resource recovery procedures, with the main focus on achieving zero waste goals. Additionally, the incumbent assists with planning and staging for zero-waste events and takes the lead on specialized compost collection programs. Three times per year in June, September, and October campus events may require the incumbent to work overtime to support campus-wide events such as commencement, move-out, and move-in activities.APPOINTMENT INFORMATIONBudgeted Salary: $29.96 - $31.15/hour. Materials collected include mixed recycling containers, compost, styrofoam, batteries, film plastic, wood, and food scraps. 30% - Student Staff SupervisionWork with and assist in assigning tasks to student staff.Train new students and temporary staff members, describing and demonstrating safe collection procedures and the most efficient ways to accomplish resource recovery tasks.Communicate general information on recycling commodities materials and quality control.Oversee and participate in waste characterization studies.25% - Education & Outreach and Event Planning & SupportAssist with customer-requested special event preparation which can include set up, clean-up, and education.Collaborate with Office of Sustainability and Grounds Resource Recovery staff to develop written and verbal educational content for waste system customers to help meet the University's zero waste goals.Provide waste educational materials and explanations to a variety of campus parties when contamination is found in their respective waste infrastructure. Participate in and support operations for campus-wide annual events such as move-in, move-out, and commencement.10% - RecordkeepingPrepare daily tally sheets by location of material collected, including material type and weight per stop, and other information as required.Recording daily the time worked by job, area, and work order.Collect waste-related metrics.Gather information about the different materials in containers, including separation, contamination rates, volume estimation, weighing, and recording results.5% - Grounds Services AssistantAssist Grounds Services in various tasks including landscape maintenance and construction duties, refuse and equipment operation, and general assistance in grounds maintenance activities. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSAbility to follow oral and written instructions specified in English.Demonstrated ability to operate and care for equipment and vehicles and report problems.Experience with computer use for data entry using spreadsheets, drawing applications, electronic record keeping, and email correspondence.Ability to work effectively with campus personnel, the campus community, and the general public regarding grounds requests and questions.Ability to implement a customer service approach, with a commitment to high ethical standards.Ability to take initiative, organize, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals at all levels of the organization directly or indirectly involved with tasks and work assignments.Ability to accommodate changing priorities and complete tasks despite intermittent interruptions.Ability to be part of a team and foster teamwork by maintaining a cooperative atmosphere and effective working relationships with a diverse population from various cultural backgrounds.Ability to operationalize and incorporate the concepts of sustainability into daily work efforts.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSExperience operating cargo trucks or delivery vehicles with lift gates and diagnose equipment operational problems.Familiarity with local and regional recycling and waste diversion programs.Ability to provide training and oversight of student employee maintenance assistants.Forklift experience or ability to become a licensed forklift operator within 6 months from date of hire.SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENTSelected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.Interviewees will be required to provide a current DMV record.Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.Ability to safely move materials weighing up to 150 lbs., using sound judgment to determine when assistance from others or the use of moving equipment is required, with or without accommodation.
