Inspection Lead- CMM Programmer

POSITION SUMMARY

The Inspection Lead / CMM Programmer is the leader of the inspection department. They are responsible for ensuring that the inspection department can meet the inspection requirements of the production schedule, as well as customer and engineering activities. To do so, they will allocate, review the performance of, and develop resources, both human and material. Additionally, they will ensure we have the capability to measure all appropriate part requirements, by developing inspection methodologies – both CMM and other digital, as well as mechanical ones – that produce highly repeatable and accurate inspection results. As the leader of this group, they will additionally support by providing guidance and assistance to the director of operations with meeting strategic goals for improvement in the area.

The quality inspectors report to the Inspection Lead / CMM Programmer

RESPONSIBILITIES

1 Inspection

Assumes responsibility for the inspection tools – digital, automated, and mechanical – in the department

Creates and manages all CMM and other automated inspection equipment programs for all inspection types

Works with engineering to develop appropriate in-process inspection routines and fixtures, and provides guidance on appropriate sampling rates and mechanical / automated methodologies

Ensures the necessary materials, tools, and documents are available for each inspection activity, and that they are available at the right place at the right time

Monitor the performance of inspection operations to ensure that the team is appropriately productive, and that they are not being limited by inspection routine performance, lack of skill, etc.

Review, analyze, and develop the inspection performance of individual inspection activities, resources, and staff.

Work with customers to replicated fixtures and CMM programs, and work to address any lack of measurement correlation between the Kalman inspection lab and the customer’s

Develop, manage, and maintain inspection software 1Factory, in particular with respect to inspection plans

Write non-conformance reports and develop presentations to make those non-conformances understandable by individuals outside of the inspection lab, such as customers and suppliers.

Assists with inspection duties when needed

2 Staff Development

Foster a positive and collaborative work environment

Review the performance of inspection staff, and provide feedback to these personnel

Mentor and train inspection team to develop their inspection skills and knowledge, across all inspection instruments

Provide Director of Operations with guidance with respect to any necessary disciplinary actions for reports, develop the appropriate documentation for those actions, as well as communicating the decisions of those actions.

Develop process and curriculum for the career development of inspection staff, from entry level to subject matter expertise, with the help of the Director of Operations

3 Technical Support

Provides support with respect to understanding the details of the results of any inspection produced in the inspection lab

Executes analysis of any inspection discrepancy or disagreement with respect to any entity – production, engineering, suppliers, and customers.

Understands when the problem being addressed is outside of his technical expertise and escalates to find support either internally or externally

Manages any exterior consultation required to support technical inspections problems

4 Continuous Improvement

Evaluate inspection processes and resources to determine what can be improved

Work with Director of Operations to codify inspection processes and best-known practices into guidance documents for inspection team.

Coordinate with Engineering and Production to determine inspection routines – first articles, in-process, lot inspections, etc. – that could be optimized

Work with Director of Operations to develop projects plans and make recommendations about the development of the overall department

JOB QUALIFICATION AND REQUIREMENTS

The Inspection Lead/ CMM Programmer must be highly skilled in the development of CNC machining processes and have knowledge and experience in all aspects of the process.

Prior supervisory experience is required

1 Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent – technical training or certification in manufacturing or machining on top of this preferred. Also, a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate technical field would be appreciated

5 years of experience in CMM programming – experience on Zeiss Calypso is highly preferred

5 years of experience in mechanical inspection

2 years of experience in a leadership role

Demonstrated knowledge of inspection techniques, tools, and equipment, including mechanical inspection equipment and the manual operation of CMMs

Ability to learn other complex inspection equipment, such as Keyence IM or XM instruments

Subject matter expertise in GD&T, in all of its various callouts

Appropriate computer proficiency to read drawings and communicate issues with peer and higher-level management.

Must have good manual dexterity and be able to lift 50 lbs.

Must be capable of standing and working with hands for prolonged periods of time
