About the Role
The First Mate of Ledgers (Senior Bookkeeper) serves as a senior leader within our bookkeeping crew, overseeing daily operations and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of all financial records. This full-charge bookkeeping role is responsible for maintaining audit-prepared books, ensuring that all client accounts are in order and ready for review by their CPA with minimal questions or adjustments. When the books and tax returns tie out perfectly, it signifies a successful voyage at the end of each month, quarter, and year.
You will also play a key role in supporting our crew and communicating directly with clients through Google Meet, Google Voice, and our Task Management Client Chat within Financial Cents. Under the direction of the Admiral of Accounts (CEO / Founder), you’ll help keep all client work flowing smoothly and ensure that no account is ever left behind.
What You’ll Do
- Supervise and support the Quartermasters of Accounts (Intermediate Bookkeepers) and Apprentice Sailors (Junior Bookkeepers) in their daily bookkeeping duties.
- Review, verify, and ensure the accuracy of all bookkeeping work completed by team members.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to team members, promoting consistency, accountability, and clear communication.
- Assist with month-end reporting and ensure all monthly financial statements are fully tied out.
- Ensure Engagement Letters and Projects are properly assigned to the team in accordance with each client’s contract.
- Communicate professionally with clients regarding missing information, transaction clarification, and document requests.
- Handle accounts receivable (A/R) tasks, including invoice processing and payment tracking.
- Manage accounts payable (A/P) tasks, including bill entry, vendor communication, and payment processing.
- Record and review journal entries accurately and consistently.
- Perform data entry, maintain organized and secure financial records, and ensure all documentation supports audit-prepared books.
- Reconcile transactions, credit cards, and bank accounts to ensure complete accuracy.
- Follow step-by-step internal processes and repeat them consistently to maintain company standards.
- Work closely with the Admiral of Accounts to ensure all client deadlines are met and that projects remain on course.
- Support the implementation of new procedures, software tools, and systems improvements.
- Maintain a professional, client-centered attitude in all communications and interactions.

Pay & Benefits
Hourly Pay: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour (depending on experience)
Schedule: Full-Time (32 - 40 hours per week)
Pay Frequency: Bi-weekly direct deposit
Remote Work: 100% remote (must reside in California)
Holidays: Office closed for 9 federal holidays
Time Off: Days off request (minimum 2 weeks in advance); currently unpaid time off
CA Sick Time: Accrued and available per California law
Stipends & Support: $25.00 per paycheck home technology stipend for internet use
Software: All bookkeeping software provided and paid for by the company
Compliance: WISP-compliant systems to ensure secure client data
