Description Client is seeking an experienced and customer-service-oriented City Planner to manage counter operations. This role will involve assisting the public with planning inquiries, providing information about zoning, land use, and development regulations, and processing planning applications. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of city planning processes and excellent communication skills to help guide residents, developers, and businesses through the city’s planning requirements.Key Responsibilities:
Counter Operations: Serve as the primary point of contact at the planning counter, assisting the public with inquiries regarding zoning, land use, development standards, and planning applications.
Customer Service: Provide professional and courteous service to residents, developers, and business owners, addressing questions related to zoning laws, land use permits, development applications, and general planning concerns.
Application Processing: Review and accept planning applications, verify completeness, and provide guidance on necessary documents and processes to ensure timely submission.
Zoning and Code Interpretation: Explain and interpret city zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, and development standards to the public, developers, architects, and other stakeholders.
Plan Review: Conduct initial plan reviews for smaller projects such as accessory dwelling units (ADUs), home improvement projects, and commercial tenant improvements to ensure compliance with city regulations.
Permit Coordination: Collaborate with other city departments such as Building and Safety, Public Works, and Engineering to ensure coordinated review and approval of planning permits.
Records and Documentation: Maintain accurate records of all planning inquiries and applications processed through the counter, ensuring proper documentation for public access and reference.
Public Outreach: Assist in preparing informational materials and providing guidance on the city’s planning procedures and requirements.
Administrative Support: Provide clerical and administrative support for the planning division, including answering phones, scheduling appointments, and managing email inquiries.
Report Preparation: Prepare and present clear and concise reports to the Planning Manager or other city staff as needed.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or a related field.
1-3 years of experience in city planning, zoning, or land use regulation, with a focus on public counter operations preferred.
Knowledge of municipal zoning codes, subdivision regulations, general plan elements, and planning-related legislation.
