The Mourrain Lab specializes in neuroscience, genetics, epigenetics, developmental biology, and engineering to achieve the following objectives:

Investigate the reasons behind sleep and how it enhances cognitive performance by altering synaptic connections.

Identify and address synaptic deficits observed in neurodevelopmental conditions like Fragile X syndrome, Autism, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and age-related synaptic changes.

Study genes and processes essential for neuronal regeneration to repair damaged brain tissue, including the retina.

Enhance knowledge of gene regulation mechanisms and explore the impact of non-coding Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) on causing human diseases.

The Animal Care Assistant II will primarily provide maintenance and care of the large fish colony (>1,500 tanks) and procedure room. The Animal Care Assistant will be required to provide 2 daily feedings of the three species of fish currently housed in the lab including Zebrafish, Cavefish and Damionella.Additional duties include:

Maintenance of tank and facility cleanliness.

Supervision of water parameters and ensuring proper functionality of the running water system

Generating brineshrimp and rotifer live cultures to feed adult fish and larvae

Preparing animal facility for inspections (APLAC, ALAAC)

Maintain strains of fish (WT, nacre etc.)

Cross fish, collect clutches

Extract DNA and perform PCR for genotyping

Lab ordering

Training in aquatic animals, zebrafish, cavefish, danionella handling.

Knowledge in molecular biology to perform DNA extraction, design primers, perform PCRs and understand DNA sequencing results

One year of applicable animal care experience in research or animal laboratory environment tor a combination of equivalent education and work experience

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): This position requires a minimum of one year of Laboratory Assistant I level or a combination of education and relevant experience.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

In addition to the qualifications listed for the Laboratory Glassware Washer, these employees must have demonstrated initiative and good judgment.

Ability to perform work with a minimum of error under general supervision.

Ability to train others in aspects of Lab Assistant work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.

Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts.

Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machines

Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders, light fine grasping.

Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.

Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.

In some Glassware Washing operations, occasionally may pull a wheeled Glassware cart that weighs approximately 100 pounds
