These initiatives include priorities defined by the Dean, School of Medicine basic science department chairs, and other targets of opportunity, emphasizing graduate student training, research funding, and endowed chairs and scholars. The gift officer in this position partners with faculty members, including department chairs, faculty with substantial research portfolios, faculty prioritized by the dean, and others who have had an inquiry from a potential donor. The gift officer will train faculty, develop strategies and materials, determine inspiring gift opportunities, and develop nuanced strategies for engaging donors.This position requires sensitivity, discretion, diplomacy, and the ability to operate independently in a highly collaborative environment while representing Stanford Medicine. If you have the strategic skills necessary to balance prospect identification and solicitation and coordinate internal support activities, including faculty management and case development, while building donor-centric, meaningful relationships, then this position might be for you. Reporting to the Director of Specialist Fundraising, the Senior Associate Director will manage an Associate Director of Development.JOB PURPOSE:The position will directly manage a portfolio of approximately 50 to 75 major gift prospects capable of making a gift between $250,000 - $10,000,000. This role will focus on building the donor base and philanthropic revenue for key Biomedical Discovery priorities, including support for PhD fellowships, a seed grant program for innovative research, and department and faculty-based basic science research initiatives, programs, and Institutes. The position partners with other “specialist” fundraisers (who also have strategic responsibility for a specific department or initiative, faculty management, and prospect portfolios) and “generalist” fundraisers (who work primarily with prospects who have multiple interests) within MCD and other fundraisers across the university to cultivate potential donors for Biomedical Discovery, Stanford Medicine, Stanford Health Care, and Stanford University.In this role, you will:
Develop philanthropic goals, objectives, and strategies to generate philanthropic support for priority initiatives and programs.
Monitor annual strategic programming goals and fundraising success, implementing appropriate interventions when necessary. Initiate and direct efforts and collaborations to help achieve those goals, including organizing strategic events, developing marketing collateral, and stewardship activities.
Manage various fundraising activities, including maintaining active contacts, identifying new prospective donors and volunteers, cultivating relationships, soliciting gifts, and providing stewardship.
Staff 50 to 75 philanthropic relationships with consistent focus and high-touch engagement, cultivation, and stewardship, leading to successful solicitation strategies. Partner with development colleagues who staff other philanthropic relationships where there is an interest in biomedical discovery.
Serve as the primary point of contact in development for academic leaders and faculty in basic science departments.
In consultation with faculty, MCD, and School of Medicine leaders, identify the highest priority core initiatives and research programs in the basic sciences.
Develop and manage relationships of mutual respect and trust with faculty members, students, clinical and academic staff, and colleagues.
Interact regularly with faculty, students, and staff to gain in-depth specialized knowledge about programs and funding needs. Partner closely with faculty, students, and staff to develop proposals and prepare them to assist with cultivation and solicitation where appropriate.
Direct and coach the efforts of the Associate Director of Development for Biomedical Discovery by providing leadership to achieve both individual goals and the collective vision of MCD.
Collaborate with colleagues on the Major Gifts Team and other teams within Medical Center Development to implement fundraising activities, particularly Principal Gifts; Corporate, Foundation, and Association Relations; Generalists; Planned Giving; Research; Donor Relations; Development Communications; and Annual Giving.
Serve as the content expert and resource for basic science research with other fundraisers and colleagues, including providing counsel on proposal content and strategy.
Work closely with other development colleagues to align biomedical discovery program goals with the overall School of Medicine and university strategic fundraising priorities.
Stay informed on current university initiatives and activities, including campaign priorities, and contribute to Stanford Medicine's overall priorities.

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Management experience, in an educational institution or nonprofit, preferred.
Ability to lead and motivate others; be at ease with colleagues at all levels, faculty, top executives, and community leaders, gaining their respect and confidence; ability to work well with staff members regardless of position in any office hierarchy; willingness to share credit.
Proven ability to achieve fundraising goals and a high level of comfort and effectiveness working with faculty, high-net-worth individuals, business executives, and community leaders.
A sense of urgency in gift discussions and responding to philanthropic opportunities, as well as being adaptable and achievement-oriented.
Commitment to a collaborative culture, with patience, persistence, and flexibility to build consensus and facilitate decision-making across multiple constituencies.
Excellent writing, communication and listening skills with the ability to collaborate and achieve results within diverse populations. A clear and confident communication style that shows spirit, enthusiasm, and integrity.
Proven skills in managing several competing priorities and complex issues creatively and effectively. This may include strategic planning, donor development, and faculty engagement with the day-to-day operations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone, stand/walk.
Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular travel may be required.
Valid passport for international travel.

The expected pay range for this position is $144,000 to $185,000 per annum.Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
