Job DescriptionJoin Dr. David Rowitch and his team as a Research Bioinformatician in Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children's! https://researchers.cedars-sinai.edu/David.RowitchThe Rowitch Laboratory is seeking an experienced bioinformatician to join the team and assist in new and ongoing research initiatives. The Rowitch lab investigates overlapping mechanisms in glial developmental biology human diseases such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and brain cancer.The Research Bioinformatician III (RB III) works independently but in close cooperation and consultation with Research Scientists, Principal Investigators, Research Nurses, and Research Coordinators. The RB III interacts with investigators to understand scientific questions, define the scope of work and propose an analytical plan with a time estimate for its completion. The RB III works independently and with bioinformatics faculties to determine future bioinformatics needs, and helps to develop tools and pipelines as necessary to keep pace with rapid advances in sequencing technology. The RB III identifies, evaluates, and incorporates relevant algorithms and software by reviewing pertinent literatures, and develops and maintains software based on current projects and in anticipation of long-term needs.What are the Primary Duties & Responsibilities?

Provide general bioinformatics analysis support for omic projects. Responsible for data analysis and software compilations including next generation sequence alignment, polymorphism identification, expression analysis, and visualization tools and browsers.

Summarize data analyses results in the form suitable as the basis for the first draft of written reports, and makes preliminary interpretations of the data.

Develop, test, and perform maintenance of modular software pipelines for genome sequencing, assembly, annotation, metagenomic analysis, and genotyping using high-throughput sequencing platforms including 454, Illumina, and Pacific Biosciences.

Manage data including loading and querying data from database systems, downloading omic data from public repositories, and transforming data to the necessary formats.

Provide solutions for investigator’s problems through data mining and extraction.

Provide bioinformatics expertise in the design of experiments and studies, including research proposal development, sample size determination, and plans for interim reviews and final analysis.

Interact with and supports other bioinformatics colleagues in pursuing excellence in research and education, including the generation of new ideas and concepts, and their dissemination.

Educate others about bioinformatics and computational biology through mentoring of and teaching colleagues, investigators, fellows, and graduate students. May organize and teach formal bioinformatics courses, inter-disciplinary courses, continuing education courses, and seminars.

QualificationsEducational & Experience Requirements:

BS Degree in Computer Science, Electric Engineering, Computational biology, or Bioinformatics required. MS Degree in Engineering in relevant fields (e.g. Biology with strong quantitative training, biostatistics with concentration in bioinformatics) preferred. PhD Degree strongly preferred.

Seven (7) years in research environment developing working knowledge in algorithms, scientific computing, and machine learning or statistics required

Seven (7) years of experience in manipulating, analyzing, and annotating very large genomic (e.g. NGS) data sets both in exploratory and pipelined fashions required

Three (3) years of basic science laboratory research experience strongly preferred.

Experience in neuroscience research bioinformatic applications strongly preferred.
