Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join DNAnexus’ growing team. We are looking for a solutions architect who enjoys working hands-on with other scientists, software engineers, and clients to solve informatics challenges to join our team. As a member of the Innovation team in the DNAnexus xVantage organization, you will work with industry leaders across all aspects of genomics, gaining exposure to leading genomic science and application development. You will advise customers on best-practices, develop and integrate bioinformatics pipelines, data standards, methods, and datasets into the DNAnexus platform. You'll also be the scientific and technical liaison between DNAnexus and some of the highest-profile clients to help them fully leverage DNAnexus products and services to achieve their scientific objectives.

The ideal candidate is a solutions architect with a strong background in bioinformatics, computational biology, translational informatics or related fields. She or he will have experience in crafting solutions combining a variety of software frameworks to aid in the analysis of genomics data in combination with various forms of phenotypic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, and other clinical and molecular data. A strong background in statistics and data analysis including techniques for the quality control of NGS data and experience with designing software solutions will further position the candidate for success. The solutions architect will oversee the overall technical relationship between DNAnexus and its clients, and give prescriptive guidance to customers on best practices for security, cost, performance, reliability and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Broadly understand scientific concepts and computational techniques underlying modern genetics and genomics research (including transcriptomic, metabolomic, proteomic, and microbiome data), clinical diagnostics, biomarker discovery, and therapeutic development.
  • Engage with developers, system administrators, software architects, project managers, directors, and C-level clients to architect, define and implement unique and complex solutions that meet customer requirements.
  • Be able to map out products and services as well as their inter-dependencies to realize clients’ visions and business needs.
  • Translate the vision of the client’s projects to the development team and play a pivotal part throughout the entire solution development lifecycle.
  • Ensure that the new solutions fit into the existing architectures from the technical, business, user, and other perspectives.
  • Participate in the identification, design, evaluation and development of concepts for customers solutions by providing technical expertise and oversight of the development of prototypes and proofs of concepts.
  • Have a good understanding of design principles, SDLC (software development life cycle) and development best practices.
  • Advance our relationships with scientific and technical users.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, biology, genetics, or related discipline with a computational emphasis; or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in engineering and software architecture design.
  • Knowledge of relevant data standards and vocabularies, APIs and schemas.
  • Highly analytical mindset, with an ability to see both the big picture and the details.
  • Understanding of the market and emerging methods and technologies.
  • Experience working in a customer-facing role.
  • Familiarity with cancer research data such as genomics, epigenetics, proteomics, EHR, registries, imaging, biobanks and clinical trials.
  • Strong programming ability in relevant frameworks and languages such as WDL, CWL, Nextflow, Python, R or shell scripting.
  • Understanding of cloud computing and high-performance computing.
  • Experience with SDLC (software development life cycle) and development best practices.
  • Experience with big data analytics technologies including Spark, Hive, and Hadoop, and an understanding of relational database concepts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills. This also requires the ability to effectively communicate complex topics with a diverse audience.
  • Enjoys interacting closely with DNAnexus customers.
  • Available for occasional travel (15%) to conferences and to customer sites. Due to Covid, there travel is currently not required.

Desirable skills

Below are the skills that are highly desirable, but are not required. DNAnexus will provide the necessary training to qualified candidates:

  • Knowledge of enterprise data warehouse and data lake environments as well as the challenges of large scale data management and governance, especially as it pertains to biomedical data.
  • Familiarity with cancer research data such as genomics, epigenetics, proteomics, EHR, registries, imaging, biobanks and clinical trials.
  • Hands-on expertise in clinical/medical informatics and significant experience in implementing phenotype/clinical data models such as OMOP, CDISC, mCODE.
  • Experience implementing database structures that support relationships established using ontologies/graph database structures.
  • Experience integrating and harmonizing genotypic and phenotypic data.
  • Excellent leadership qualities, interpersonal skills, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with software development and project management processes and tools (agile, JIRA, wiki, etc.).
  • Familiarity with software development and project management processes/tools such as agile processes and Jira.
