CDHSCareers Description of JobSummary of Position:The Director of Nursing leads, manages, plans, organizes, oversees and directs the day-to- day clinical operations of the Fitzsimons Veterans Community Living Center in accordance with current federal, state, local policies, laws and regulations that govern the facility. The Director of Nursing ensures the nursing staff provide the highest degree of quality care to the residents we serve. The individual in this position assumes responsibility and accountability for clinical outcomes of the facility, overseeing nursing practices of the RNs, LPNs, and CNAs. The Director of Nursing is also responsible for and accountable for data, practices, policies and procedures reviewed during QAPI, staff education, and annual CMS and VA surveys. The Director of Nursing collaborates with the Nursing Home Administrator to address deficiencies cited during surveys and is responsible for supervision of the Assistant Director of Nursing, Infection Preventionist and Nurse Managers, while reporting directly to the Nursing Home Administrator.Job Duties:Leads, manages, oversees, organizes, plans and directs the day-to-day activities, including compliance with federal, state and local laws, regulations, policies and guidelines; implementing policies and procedures that meet the highest standards of care and supports the improvement of quality measures; and assuming the responsibility for ensuring quality services are being provided by the nursing staff to the residents and veterans we serves.

Serves as a resource and role model for nursing staff.

Responsible for fostering and maintaining positive working relationships with residents and their families, between nursing staff members and between nursing staff and other Fitzsimons employees.

Acts as a representative of the facility.

Maintains administrative authority, responsibility and accountability for the Nursing Department

Responsible for and accountable for the employee/employer relationship, including recruitment, selection, performance management, and retention.

Responsible for and accountable for all aspects of complying with state and federal quality measures imposed by the long-term care regulations and state, federal and VA standard clinical practices.

Uses data to improve quality measures, address trends and/or deficiencies.

Participates in investigations related to MANE (Misappropriation, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation) allegations and concerns

Responsibility includes addressing attendance and performance/behavior issues as the Appointing Authority while guiding nurse management to be strong, competent leaders.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal RightsMinimum Qualifications:Current, unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing OR any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

Six (6) years of full-time (or equivalent part-time/contract) professional experience in skilled nursing or long-term care management including (2) two years as a supervisor or equivalent.

Master's degree in nursing from an accredited institution. (Two additional years of experience will substitute, as indicated below.)

Substitutions :

Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

Three (3) years of experience as a Director of Nursing in a skilled nursing facility

Experience managing the COVID pandemic in a long-term care facility

Experience using data to improve performance

Experience having developed and applied a philosophy of person-centered care in a long term care environment

Conditions of Employment:

Must complete a TB Test

Must possess a valid, current Colorado Driver's License

Must possess and maintain a current CPR certification

Must possess and maintain current, unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

Shift Work: May be required to work all shifts, weekends and holidays

Essential Services Designation: required to be on duty to perform essential and/or emergency services of the agency without delay or interruption.

Travel may be required to other facilities, offsite meetings and could include overnight stays.

Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.

Effective September 20, 2021, this position will require documented proof of full COVID-19 vaccination. New employees will be required to provide attestation to their status with proof of vaccination within thirty (30) business days of hire. On or after October 31, 2021, each facility shall ensure all newly hired employees, direct contractors, or support staff members are fully vaccinated at the time of hire, or receive their first dose of a two-dose protocol, or a single-dose vaccination, prior to providing any care, treatment, or other services for the facility and/or its clients.
