This position will be working with the WPC in College Park, MD, within the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP). The NCWCP is a highly collaborative environment containing several NOAA organizations, including the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC), NWS/NCEP Central Operations, and Climate Prediction Center (CPC). The incumbent will interact with NCEP Staff and other CIRES employees working at WPC to develop and improve various NWS operational websites. Develop public-facing dynamic websites containing novel graphics that will be utilized by professionals and the public

Collaborate with social scientists and WPC meteorological developers in the creation and testing of public-facing websites

Enhance preexisting operational websites utilizing new tools and technologies

Create and maintain proper documentation on websites and projects

Draft final reports as needed for website and/or content management system requirements, usability assessments, and/or experimental testing derived recommendations

Perform related duties as assigned

What You Should Know

Please note that those applicants requiring visa sponsorship or working in the U.S through a visa or working permit will not be considered for this position.

The targeted start date for this position is May 1, 2024.

Normal working hours will be observed except for occasional irregular hours during data collection, warning/forecast experiments, or workshops conducted at remote sites. Incumbent will receive training and gain expertise in Facilitating forecast experiments and evaluations.

The new hire will be employed by CIRES with technical oversight provided by WPC management. The incumbent will work under general supervision but is expected to work independently and determine action to be taken in handling all but unusual situations. The incumbent is expected to serve as a leader of scientific or technical experiments, groups, or teams; therefore, strong teamwork and leadership skills are necessary.

This role is based at the WPC in College Park, MD, but fully remote work will be considered.

Selected finalists will be required to pass a federal background check for site access.

CIRES can offer a generous compensation package. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.

The annual hiring salary range for this position is $80,000-$110,000.

A Bachelors degree with at least 6+ years of experience in computer science, engineering, or other IT related activities.

6 years or greater of relevant work experience:

Experience with standard DevOps, including version control (e.g., Git or Subversion), automated testing, and expert code review

Experience with CMS systems such as Drupal, WordPress or Joomla!, Content Management System templating (e.g. Twig)

Experience with standard Web technologies (e.g., JS, PHP, HTML, CSS, etc.)

Experience managing large data driven websites with a CMS

Experience building intuitive and explainable web interfaces for the public(s)

Experience with Python and Python libraries (e.g., Zarr, NumPy, SciPy, Flask, PyScript)

Scripting/programming experience (e.g., Bash, Python, Perl, C)

Experience with Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems

Experience in implementing software to accommodate customer needs

Experience in developing code that meets current security standards

Experience or willingness to work across disciplines like social and physical scientists on building user experiences, etc.
