Integrated Pest Management Technician

Facilities Management at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Integrated Pest Management Technician! This role will provide Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program services for campus, including providing pest removal services that are safe, effective, and accountable. The position will also improve worker health and safety by minimizing exposure to pesticides and assist in continued research, implementation, and use of the least toxic IPM techniques.

Who We Are:

Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for the overall physical development and maintenance of the campus. The mission of this department is to provide a safe physical environment that promotes the advancement and transfer of knowledge.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be:

Integrated Pest Management

Use management techniques designated by the manager, deciding whether control is necessary (assessing damage threshold levels). Methods used for control: Biological, Mechanical, Cultural or Chemical. The role will be entering confined spaces and notifying EH&S of health or safety issues. Assist in developing, recommending and implementing IPM procedures for the campus, placing priority on non-chemical methods including cultural, mechanical and biological controls. Perform detailed and routine inspections of all areas while at sites to assist in the reduction or elimination of pest problems through early detection.

Research

Provide research and assistance on pesticide reduction techniques to the campus community for both structural and ornamental/natural land settings. This includes non-chemical approaches to controlling Insects, Mammals and Birds.

Work Order Tracking

Input daily actions into work order system and associated spreadsheet. Track and input IPM activities including chemical use and non-chemical controls. Data includes volumes of pesticides used, hours spent, equipment costs, exclusionary tactics, cultural changes needed, and success achieved. Train on the AiM work order system to reach proficiency.

Training

Assist training others in IPM techniques and IPM procedures as requested. Assist in coordinating training, which includes proper IPM technique, accurate chemical handling procedures, and prevention of illness through elimination of vectors. Individuals to be trained include building proctors, maintenance staff, custodians and staff in other departments who may be assisting on the program.

Education

Secure continued Educational Credits as required by the State Agriculture Department to maintain current (Pesticides Applicator) Certified Operator or Qualified Supervisors License.

Other Duties

Unspecified duties as directed by manager to maintain the operational readiness of the department and the campus. Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings. Complete continuing education to establish or maintain proficiency. As an essential services employee, the position is responsible to respond to other duties as assigned on an "as needed" basis. Notify manager of safety incidents, near misses and all potential hazards. Maintain safe work practices, participate in department safety meetings and complete assigned trainings.

Attend additional seminars, presentations, and conferences focused on IPM programs and techniques designed to reduce pesticide use and impacts of exposure.

Attain/maintain currency of required certification for different types of controls, i.e., bird control, rodent control and large mammal control, etc. Each has unique techniques and requirements.

What You Should Know:

May be called in to handle pest management issues after hours and on weekends. Position will rotate emergency call-in coverage with other technicians.

This in-person position’s anticipated schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

This position is eligible for our Facilities Management Employee Referral Program.

What We Require:

Must be a Colorado resident to apply and have a valid Colorado driver's license.

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).

Five years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Within 6 months, will acquire a State of Colorado Certified Operator license for pesticide applications.

Hold a current State of Colorado Qualified Supervisor's license for pesticide applications.
