Description of JobAbout the UnitThis position works in the Concrete & Physical Properties Program at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). The Program provides timely and accurate test results for soils, concrete, aggregate, steel and other construction and maintenance materials. This program provides statewide portland cement concrete and physical properties coordination through engineering and technical expertise that will assist the regions in the development and maintenance of transportation projects.About the PositionThis position processes samples for testing, conducts assigned tests and records and reports the test results on, aggregate and soil to assure compliance with contract requirements.Major Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to :

Processes materials samples and perform tests on construction materials in accordance with the applicable American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Colorado Procedures.

Enters all test results in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and report out data to projects via CDOT's application for reporting.

Use Excel to maintain information of samples coming in, equipment maintenance, calibration and inventory and inventory.

Checks results of tests for acceptance and compliance pre tables, charts, and written specifications per AASHTO, Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL), and Colorado procedures in the lab and field.

Inputs data, assigns lab test numbers and generates worksheets.

Records and prepares test reports for supervisor’s review.

Provides explanations and answers questions for test data and reports.

Maintains data for the program, including sample submittals and test results.

Performs general maintenance on testing equipment, including cleaning, lubrication and repair as needed. Installation of new equipment.

Receives and reviews information to ensure proper tracking of samples and log in test samples

Assists training of technicians, assistants and region testers, including demonstrating proper test methods.

Provides assistance in WAQTC and ACI certification programs and other Staff Materials training as assigned.

Assist in the CCRL/AASHTO re:source accreditation in the Soils Lab. Duties include testing, documenting, calibrating, checking equipment or other duties as assigned, in accordance with AASHTO R-18.

Work Environment

Primarily daytime work hours, Monday – Friday

Required to drive to during working hours to various projects to gather material for testing in the lab or perform concrete testing on the projects site.

Drives to suppliers to pick up needed testing equipment and testing materials to perform tests in the labs.

Overnight travel 4 -5 times per year to perform inspections of Region Labs.

Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.

Exposure to nonweather-related hot and cold temperatures.

Contact with water or other liquids; or exposure to nonweather-related humid conditions.

Exposure to a shaking objects or surfaces.

Exposure to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation, that affects the respiratory system, eyes or, the skin.

Proximity to moving, mechanical parts.

Exposure to radiant energy.

Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals

Exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force regularly.

Required to drive CDOT vehicles

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal RightsMinimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED certificate.

AND five (5) years of experience assisting Physical Scientists or LIcensed Professional Engineers one year of which must have in materials testing.

Substitution:

Completion of coursework related to the major job duties from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. If using education to substitute for some of the required experience, you must submit a legible copy of your unofficial college transcript(s) or credential evaluation report with your application. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must have been assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service.

Condition of Employment:A current valid driver’s license is required for this position as it requires operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
