Research programs include those related to mycobacteria, retroviruses, prions, and arthropod-borne infectious diseases, as well as the diagnostic investigation of naturally-occurring animal diseases. A leader in education, MIP provides the only microbiology undergraduate degree program in Colorado, a graduate program that provides training in a number of cutting-edge disciplines, and several specialized veterinary residency training programs.Position SummaryWe are seeking a research scientist to study the effect of Rift Valley fever virus challenge on mosquito genomic histone modifications. These studies will address questions on the molecular underpinnings of vector competence by looking at markers of transcriptional regulation. These studies will involve extensive manipulation with live, infected mosquitoes at BSL3 containment, detailed record-keeping, testing samples using standard virological and molecular biology techniques, and, lastly, extensive computational approaches to answer the research questions at hand.This position is part-time (75%) FTE and is a temporary, short-term role for 3-6 months. This research will be conducted at CVID in collaboration with the USDA in Manhattan, Kansas. The successful candidate will report to Dr. Corey Rosenberg in the Kading Lab and be assigned to the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology.The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by start date of employment; the Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.Required Job Qualifications

High School Diploma (or GED ), 2 or more years of completed study towards an AA, BA, or BS degree, plus relevant work experience or skills

Applicants must have at least two years of relevant professional experience in computational biology, virology, molecular biology, or vector biology.

The successful candidate will possess a strong work ethic, excellent organizational and communication skills, knowledge of standard molecular biology techniques, and the ability to work independently and learn new methods as a member of a large and diverse research team.

Experience in BSL3 level laboratory

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by start date of employment; the Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position

Preferred Job Qualifications

Candidates with experience in developing computational workflows and bioinformatics are preferred.

Infection and maintenance of mosquitoes via infectious blood meals.

Development of wet-lab and computational SOPs and workflows for chromatin immunoprecipitation of mosquito DNA .

In vitro assessment of virus infection and/or replication by standard plaque assay and molecular methods (RT-qPCR).

Management of virus stocks, cells, mosquito colonies, and reagents needed to carry out this project.

Project management – compilation and analysis of data, assistance with preparation of reports, adherence to the timeline for completion of project tasks, participation on conference calls with project sponsor as appropriate.

Participating in group discussions/meetings.
