About the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities: The Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities (GCPD) strives to uplift people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) in Indiana by implementing the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act (DD Act), a federal law created to support people with disabilities and their families. From funding community impact grants to influencing public policy, GCPD aspires to shape Indiana into strong, supportive communities that enshrine inclusion, dignity of risk, and self-determination for people with ID/DD, where they can live, work, and fully participate in life as the experts of their own lives. Salary: This internship pays $24.26 per hour. It is for 30 hours per week and will run from June 1 - August 10, 2024. Internship Overview: In response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with developmental disabilities, Five-by-Five interns will assist in designing, implementing, and administering programs to assist with access to public health information and services and to prepare for future health challenges. You will be involved in at least one of these areas:

Education Access and Quality

Health Care Access and Quality

Economic Stability

Neighborhood and Built Environment

Social and Community Context

You may conduct community engagement and analysis, research public policy, and develop strategies within the assigned focus area. You will need a diverse and equity-focused perspective that includes advocacy, community inclusion, and belonging.

This highly competitive position will provide recent graduates with the chance to develop professional skills and enhance their leadership abilities. It is an excellent opportunity to gain experience with Indiana’s Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities as part of a collaborative team.

Preference will be given to applicants in their last year of a bachelor's degree or a master's program. To be eligible, you must be pursuing a degree in public health, disability studies, human services, or a similar field.

A Day in the Life: Engage in:

Discovery and Navigation: having the information and tools needed to navigate the Public Health System for People with ID/DD.

Connecting and Networking: making connections with the State addressing specific public health areas with people with ID/DD and their family members to conduct community needs assessments, identify needed resources, increase education and awareness about public health issues, and build trust between Public Health workers and the ID/DD community.

Goods and Services: the day-to-day tangible items or products purchased or used from public and private organizations in your community.

Interns serving in this role will:

Serve as the specialist in an area serving individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, and their caregivers and families.

Establish program objectives, KPIs, and actions to achieve them.

Develop, update, and monitor all policies and procedures related to the program area.

Assist with the analysis, preparation, and dissemination of monthly and quarterly program reports.

Ensure program requirements meet federal and state policies and grant compliance.

What You'll Need for Success: This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:

Must be in your final year of a bachelor's degree, or enrolled as a graduate student, with a major in public health, disability studies, human services, or a similar field.

Specialized knowledge in program subject matter obtained through experience and/or education.

Specialized knowledge of program area including pertinent rules and regulations.

Extensive knowledge of all source materials and references including federal and state laws governing the programs.

Ability to develop and implement new principles and policies and discern any far-reaching implications.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.

Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Working knowledge of accounting and budget principles.

Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.

Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
