About the State Comptroller's Office:The mission of the State Comptroller’s Office is to carry out the constitutional responsibilities of the Comptroller by: Informing the public about the Indiana State government’s finances; Maintaining the State’s financial records and reports and paying the State’s bills and employees accurately and efficiently; Taking a leadership role in the development of the State’s financial policy; Upholding the public’s trust and confidence by ensuring that Hoosier’s tax dollars are accounted for and spent transparently; Serving as a check and balance within the executive branch to sustain accountability among state and local governmental entities and; Providing quality customer service to all who conduct business with the State of Indiana. Salary Statement: The salary for this position traditionally starts at $49,000 but may be commensurate with education or work experience. Role Overview: The Indiana State Comptroller's Payroll Department processes a biweekly payroll for 35,000+ employees across three branches of government. The State Comptroller's Office is seeking a Payroll Specialist to join our team of dedicated payroll professionals. This position requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills along with an enthusiasm for learning. The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, possess critical thinking skills, have strong written and verbal communication skills, demonstrate proven knowledge of fundamental payroll concepts, and exhibit the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in a fast-paced environment. A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows:

Serve as a subject matter expert for state agencies for day-to-day support of Payroll and Timekeeping systems.

Provide guidance for payroll concepts, including tax withholding, garnishments, pensions, savings plans, bonuses, taxable fringe benefits, FLSA rules and regulations.

Perform daily analysis of critical timekeeping and payroll data.

Apply methodical problem-solving skills.

Perform essential data inputs with great attention to detail.

Review and audit data inputs/outputs.

Assist with Payroll and Timekeeping ticket management.

Create and update training materials.

What You'll Need for Success: You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

Must have at least 1-3 years of payroll experience

Must have proven knowledge of payroll concepts

Must be a self-starter and demonstrate initiative

Must have a strong desire to learn

Must have well-developed root-cause analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot problems

Previous experience with PeopleSoft Payroll for North America preferred

Previous experience with PeopleSoft Time & Labor preferred

Previous experience with UKG, formerly Kronos, Timekeeping solution preferred

Experience with a large volume payroll preferred

Experience in state government preferred

Strong skills across the entire suite of Microsoft Office products

Ability to accurately collect information to understand and assess the situation

Ability to prioritize workload and provide timely follow-up and resolution

Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with a team

Ability to multi-task and prioritize

Ability to adapt well to change

Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information

Ability to prioritize quality and customer service

Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
