The fellow will work under the direction and primary mentorship of Dr. Elham Mahmoudi, PhD (health economist), mainly on an awarded R01 grant, examining the effect of Medicare Advantage compared with traditional Medicare on racial/ethnic disparities in healthcare spending and quality of care among patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). The fellow will directly work with traditional Medicare claims and Medicare Advantage encounter data for patients with ADRD. The fellow will have access to institutional resources such as the Data and Methods Hub at the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation at the University of Michigan and work closely with Dr. Mahmoudi.Candidates with a PhD degree in economics, epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field with prior exposure to claims data analysis are sought. Experience in data management and statistical analysis using SAS, STATA, or R is required.Candidates for this position must be driven and detail-oriented, have an intellectual curiosity and desire to continue learning and be able to work flexibly and collaboratively on multiple projects simultaneously. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are desired. The fellow will have access to mentors who can help support career growth and provide guidance when encountering analytic challenges. In addition, the fellow will be trained to write grant proposals to be prepared for a research-focused academic position. This is a Full-time, 2-3 year position.ResponsibilitiesThis position involves various tasks related to managing and analyzing administrative claims data. Experience in integrating and analyzing multiple complex data sources is expected.Specifically, the position involves having a solid analytic mindset and statistical/econometric background to conduct:
Cohort selection: The fellow is expected to work with claims data to clean, manage, and merge various files using medical codes (e.g., ICD, CPT, or HCPIC codes) to finalize analytic files.
Statistical analysis: The fellow will write, test, and validate programs using SAS, STATA, or R to manage large datasets. Collaborating with the PI, the fellow is expected to apply innovative econometric methods using causal inference and simulation methodologies.
Co-authorship: The fellow is expected to lead and assist in writing manuscripts.
Required Qualifications
PhD in economics, epidemiology, biostatics, or related fields
Experience working with complex insurance claims data
Working knowledge of epidemiologic/econometric concepts and methodologies
