The cover letter should address your specific interest in the position and outline skills and experience that directly relate to this position.Job SummaryThe Michigan Public Health - Substance Use Policy and Economic Research (M-SUPER) Network at the University of Michigan School of Public Health is seeking a full-time statistician at the senior level. This is a three (3)-year term-limited appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon performance and funding.Under general direction, the statistician will select study samples in large health insurance claims databases; analyze and interpret a wide variety of data according to established statistical methods; and prepare reports and tables summarizing results of analyses. This position requires an individual who can work with a high degree of independence within the scope of their responsibilities. The individual will be expected to analyze, compare, and evaluate different courses of action to solve complex analytic and programming problems without immediate supervision. Salary will be determined based on candidate qualifications and experience.The M-SUPER Network is an interdisciplinary, interinstitutional consortium of faculty, investigators, and students coordinated by Dr. Thuy Nguyen, principal investigator (PI) and Assistant Professor of Health Management and Policy in the University of Michigan School of Public Health. The network members employ rigorous quantitative approaches and leverage access to multiple large databases to address pressing substance use policy knowledge gaps (https://sph.umich.edu/msuper).ResponsibilitiesApplicants must have a broad knowledge of statistical and programming principles, practices, and procedures, as the position requires a high degree of independence. At the same time, applicants must also have outstanding communication skills and operate as a highly valued collaborator with faculty, biostatisticians, research analysts, and database administrators. Responsibilities include:

Contributing intellectually to the design, implementation, programming, analysis, reporting, documentation, and dissemination of research projects as a co-author

Designing, testing, implementing, and debugging SAS programs using SQ to clean, manage, and merge analytic datasets from large health insurance claims databases as dictated by study protocols

Conducting advanced statistical analyses, such as regression modeling, multiple imputation, multilevel modeling, and survey analysis

Working closely with the M-SUPER team to develop grant proposals, including contributing to the framework of the study aims, designing and authoring the methodological approach, and performing power and sample size calculations

Successful performance of these duties will require:

Reshaping and combining large, complex data files to support multiple analytic approaches (50%)

Organizing and maintaining analytic datasets and file systems for several projects (20%)

Developing flow charts and other resources to clearly document processes to combine datasets; building analytic datasets; identifying study populations, etc. (10%)

Independently planning and conducting complex analyses and technical investigations based upon comprehensive knowledge of statistical approaches (10%)

Leading the development of statistical methodology for manuscripts and grants (10%)

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in related field with strong computing and quantitative skills

Minimum of 3 years of direct experience with data management and statistical analysis for Statistician Senior, or 1-3 years for Statistician Intermediate

At least 1 year of experience analyzing claims databases, such as Medicare, Medicaid, or commercial claims

Proficiency in the use of SAS and PROC SQL to manage, merge and manipulate large datasets

Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of health services research to the completion of difficult assignments

Must be able to work with minimal supervision

Desired Qualifications

Master's Degree in public health, biostatistics, statistics, computer science or economics

Experience with complex data structures and linkages between data sources (e.g., administrative medical claims databases)

Proficiency with STATA (experience with SAS is required)

Demonstrated excellence in teaching, consulting, and mentoring in statistical concepts

Excellent professional, verbal and written communication skills

Ability to prioritize and organize multiple projects at the same time

Ability to independently act as a resource and problem-solver with minimal supervision
