GENERAL SUMMARY:Under minimal supervision, develop and conduct moderately complex research experiments, interpret data, identify potential problems, and find solutions. Research literature in the field. Conduct experiments and collect and analyze data using various degrees of statistical methodology. Train other lab members in experimental techniques. Ensure compliance with animal care and occupational safety regulations.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Report to PhD or MD researcher for the purpose of participating in specific experimental, scientific protocols.

With minimal guidance, conduct moderately complex research experiments and develop new methodologies.

Collect and interpret data for analysis of experimental results.

Plan and perform various types of experimentation which may use animals and experimental models, ensuring compliance with animal care and occupational safety requirements.

Develop research methodologies within the parameters of experimental protocols and research objectives to allow quantitative and qualitative evaluations and interpretation of data obtained.

Maintain a high quality record of all experimental results.

Assay samples for analysis of peptides, proteins, DNA and RNA and other molecules.

Prepare reagents for appropriate assay of samples, including determination of the appropriate concentration of components of solutions and buffers.

May work with radioactive isotopes for the analysis of molecules.

Processes and records samples, orders materials for assays, determines schedule for assays planned. Makes written progress reports and prepares summaries of data.

Maintain equipment and keep maintenance records on equipment.

Perform various degrees of statistical analysis related to the experiment.

Perform tasks related to routine organization of the laboratory environment to include: keeping records, stocking, ordering lab supplies, and making stock solutions.

Operate sophisticated laboratory equipment to conduct research (such as high pressure liquid chromatography, centrifuges, computers and a variety of analytical software, radioisotope counters, gel electrophoresis equipment, pH meters, balances, spectrophotometers, microscopes, gamma counters, infusion pumps, etc.).

Keep abreast of new techniques and review literature in the field pertinent to the area of research. Analyze data and prepare figures for presentations/manuscripts.

May assist in writing papers for publication and scientific presentations based on research performed.

May assist in the preparation of annual reports and in writing research proposals.

Attends lab meetings with Principal Investigator or research supervisor to discuss data, its interpretation, new ideas, and the feasibility of proposed research.

Performs other related duties as required (such as routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment).

Assist in training users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques.

Train other lab members in experimental techniques.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university.

Scientific discipline appropriate to the research department.

Highly motivated and organized.

One to three (1-3) years of relevant post-baccalaureate experience.

Requires the manual dexterity to operate complex equipment.

Familiarity with statistical and research methodology is desirable.

Experience in cell culture; and isolation of primary hepatocytes.
