Walkabout Outdoor’s Field Managers bridge their experienced field knowledge with leadership
and motivation of a diverse team while monitoring project progress to ensure quality production.
Associate managers are also responsible for shop upkeep including grounds, materials, tools
and equipment.
Field Operations Skills: 70-95%
● Landscaping: experienced with grading soil, installation of drainage features, demolition
of landscape features, deliveries with truck & trailer, operation of sod cutter, rototiller,
Dingo, and all landscape power tools; Hardscape construction cleanup, small tree &
shrub removal, installation of joint sand and other minor Hardscape tasks.
● Gardening: grading soil to final grade, proper installation of plants, soil amendments and
mulch according to plans, detailed cleanup of the entire project area, plant identification
including diagnosis of disease & care requirements, broad knowledge of garden
maintenance practices, creative annual installation.
● Irrigation: reads and understands irrigation plans, has working knowledge of irrigation
components and systems. Can operate systems, identify components, and can repair
mainlines, valves, lateral lines, driplines, rotors & sprinklers, and other emitter types.
Understands the function of an irrigation audit and can use it to design an irrigation
schedule that meets garden & client aims. Successfully troubleshoots irrigation issues
without assistance.
● Lighting: reads and understands lighting plans, has working knowledge of lighting
components and can troubleshoot properly and safely.
● Ecology: Actively pursues deepening their knowledge of ecology processes and how
gardening plays a part in our environment. Engages teammates in topical conversation.
Associate Management Responsibilities: 5-30%
● Site & Project Assessment: properly identify existing plants and their condition, work
areas for maintenance, soil type, microclimates, slope, and other features of a
landscape.
● Project Coordination, Training, Budgeting & Quality Control: manages workflow
according to a multi-day construction plan including reporting progress and changes to
the designer or project manager. Independently coordinates equipment, tools, and
materials before leaving to site and then coordinates and instructs daily tasks on-site to
various skill levels. Oversees quality expectations are met or exceeded.
● Reports & Record Keeping: accurately tracks materials and supplies on a daily
end-of-day report, communicates daily to senior management about progress and
collaborates with them to meet project expectations. Communicates with clients about
progress and plans via a CRM & field meetings.
● Leadership: Acting representative of project field team. Communicates needed changes
in labor force, employee requests or suggestions, and team successes and challenges.
Advocates and illustrates company values. Demonstrate poactive communication with
senior management and clients and steps in to educate other employees in the skilled
production of Walkabout’s products & services.
● Professional Development: independently works through and completes independent
projects as assigned, has active participation in team meetings, engages in professional
development activities, partakes in independent learning and generously shares and
investigates that knowledge.
Requirements:
● 2-3 years professional experience
● Degree in horticulture or equivalent experience
● Available to work up to 50 hrs a week seasonally April-November including weekends as
necessary
● Available to be on-call through a period of the winter for minor maintenance and
troubleshooting as needed.
● Valid driver's license with good driving record
● Experience driving a truck & trailer
● Smartphone available for communicating via Slack, Monday and Google.
