What You Will DoThis position will be filled at either the Development and Fabrication Tec 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. We are seeking a highly motived Electrical Assembly Technician to assist with the fabrication of custom instrumentation for space applications. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, interested in learning, and a team player. The Space Instrument Realization Group (ISR-5) provides engineering and technical expertise to develop and deploy high-quality, innovative measurement systems to space for national security applications and NASA missions. ISR-5 is composed of electrical and mechanical engineers, systems engineers, technicians, project control specialists, and technical project managers, all of whom engage on interdisciplinary, high performance project teams that span conceptual development to deployment. The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has been designing, building, and operating highly innovative ground, air, and space-based measurement and detection systems for nearly 60 years; including space-based measurement systems for verification of international nuclear treaties, basic scientific missions, nuclear nonproliferation, space situational awareness, and remote sensing. In addition, we lead experiments on NASA missions, including the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars Rovers, Van Allen Probes, IBEX, and the upcoming IMAP, NACHOS, and BeamPIE missions.On any given day, you may:Assemble printed circuit boards (PCBs), cables, box wiring, and cable harnesses

Provide instrument and system assembly for Hi Reliability Instruments and prototypes

Quality assurance and peer inspections

Multitask between multiple projects

Communicate (verbal and written) with colleagues on topics such as technical needs and schedule

Collaborate with fabrication shop coworkers to identify and perform work as a team

Development and Fabrication Tec 3 ($53,500 - $82,800):Fully proficient in the assembly of PCBs with components, assemblies and systems for space applications. Fabricate cables and harnesses. Apply technical job knowledge and propose solutions to design challenges. Includes specifications of procured components, interpretation of component and assembly design drawings and shop fabrication/assembly liaison as applicable. As a Development and Fabrication Tec 3 you will be working on a wide array moderately complex projects while actively learning from fellow stakeholdersDevelopment and Fabrication Tec 4 ($64,400 - $102,300):The Development and Fabrication Tec 4 will be expected to apply advanced knowledge and provide leadership in the responsibilities outlined above. As a Development and Fabrication Tec 4 you should be a self-sufficient contributor.What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:Technical Experience and Skills:Soldering and Mechanical Tools:Demonstrated experience and knowledge of soldering and mechanical tools, including using a solder pot for tinning components.

High-Reliability Hardware:Demonstrated experience in the assembly of High-Reliability hardware including printed circuit boards, cables, cable assemblies, and box wires.

Printed Circuit Boards:Demonstrated experience in printed circuit board assembly, including small footprints surface mount components, FPGAs, surface mount integrated circuits, and assembly of multi-layer boards.

Assembly & Quality:Demonstrated knowledge of assembly procedures, materials, and processes used for flight applications. Ability to become IPC and J-Standard certified for electronics assembly and quality assurance inspections.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD):Demonstrated knowledge of electrostatic discharge sensitive (ESD) devices and effects of handling on electronic components based on device sensitivity.

Schematics and Layouts:Demonstrated ability to interpret schematic drawings and printed circuit board layouts.

General Electronic Components: Familiarity with general electronic components along with the ability to interpret electronic component datasheets.

Equipment Operation:Use of pick and place (such as Fritsch-manual). Operate infrared (IR) and/or convection reflow ovens. Perform manual rework at, for example, Hakko and/or Scorpion stations. Familiar with standard adhesive processes, such as a Thinky mixer. Maintain Aqueous wash.

Procurement:Order supplies and chemicals used in the fabrication shop.

Communication & Teaming:Demonstrated ability to contribute to an effective team and interact with colleagues with diverse professional, educational, and experience backgrounds. Excell at working with others and fully engaged team player. Effective written and oral skills. Candidate must have demonstrated record of commitment to safety, security, environment, and quality.Additional Job Requirements for Development and Fabrication Tec 4:Timeliness: Experience working and delivering product on schedule, while being involved in multiple projects having various and sometimes changing priorities.Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires an Associates’ Degree and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Desired Qualifications:Experience working with space-based and/or high reliability subsystems and assemblies.

Willingness to learn and become proficient in, or demonstrated experience with ISR specific databases (i.e. pc/MRP, TeamForge).

Demonstrated knowledge/experience performing Quality Assurance Inspections on space based and/or high reliability subsystems and assemblies.

Active Q clearance.
