What You Will DoInformation Systems and Modeling R&D Deputy Group LeaderYou will be part of the Information Systems and Modeling Group (A-1) to facilitate cutting-edge applied scientific and engineering research and development (R&D) for national and global security spanning a broad range of topics.Some of A-1's core capabilities lie in advanced applied data analytics, critical infrastructure resiliency and vulnerability modeling, fast-running plume dispersion models, applied quantum computing, and more. A-1 is trusted byinternational, federal, state, and local governments to help inform decision-makers about threats like weather and climate impacts on our electrical grid, global pandemics, wildfires, and chemical and biological weapons. A-1'sworkforce has deep expertise in modeling and simulation of real-world systems, experimental validation of computer and mathematical models, statistical modeling and machine learning/artificial intelligence, and production-qualitysoftware development and deployment. A-1's customers and partners include the U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health, Department of HomelandSecurity, Intelligence Community, World Health Organization, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and many more. Because the threat landscape is constantly evolving, so too is A-1's exciting scientific and engineering R&D portfolio.As a Deputy Group Leader (DGL), you will be an integral member of the highly collaborative Analytics, Intelligence, and Technology (A) Division Leadership Team. The Deputy Group Leader (DGL) will play a key leadership role withinthe Group, reporting directly to the Group Leader (GL). This position involves providing both technical and operational oversight, as well as offering technical leadership to the Group. In collaboration with the Group Leader, the DGLwill coordinate the activities of project leaders, team leaders, and staff to enhance capabilities, improve work quality, and ensure cost and technical effectiveness. The DGL will enable the staff to foster and cultivate a culture ofinnovation and continuous learning and will play a key role in developing, mentoring, and sustaining the workforce to position the Group for success in the present and future.The DGL will be expected to:

Provide oversight, support, and coordination of work by ensuring safety and security of the workforce.

Identify, manage, and mitigate technical and organizational risk and enable timely/accurate delivery of high-quality technical products.

Increase the impact of A-1 by leading and/or partnering to advance the development and broad utilization of complex research solutions across the Division and Laboratory.

Enhance the competitive position of Group capabilities, including by helping shape A-1's evolving short- and long-term strategies.

Work with the A Division Leadership Team, Laboratory program offices, and key stakeholders to develop, plan, and execute innovative projects and programs to enable/build collaborations across the institution.

Lead and mentor staff and take the initiative in strategic workforce development, succession planning, recruiting, retention, ethical and respectful work environment, and diversity of employees.

Assist in performance and salary management of staff, strategic workforce planning, providing growth and development opportunities, and recognizing individual and team accomplishments.

Identify facility needs and technology investments required to promote operational and technology sustainment for the Group.

Assist in managing A-1's internal budgets supporting research, development, and Group operations.

What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:Technical Experience

Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in one or more of A-1's core R&D competencies: critical infrastructure system modeling and simulation; chemical, biological, radiological, and/or nuclear plume dispersionmodeling; wildfire modeling; epidemiological modeling; natural language processing; quantum computing and theory; export control regimes and systems; applied artificial intelligence and machine learning; statisticalmodeling; human behavior modeling; or other related fields.

Demonstrated working knowledge of U.S. priorities with respect to national and global security.

Leadership

Proven ability to motivate and lead a team with diverse skillsets and expertise through a complex technical risk landscape such as situations with competing or conflicting priorities or within highly constrained funding andschedules.

Demonstrated ability to drive a creative, entrepreneurial R&D work environment in which innovation and continuous learning are essential for solving some of the most difficult challenges in science, engineering, andnational security.

Demonstrated passion for and record of continuous personal learning and professional growth.

Ability to support the A-1 Group Leader by supporting Group members, working with Laboratory organizations that collaborate with A-1, interfacing with Laboratory leadership, and interacting with external sponsors andvisitors.

Project Management

Demonstrated experience in all aspects of project management of technical or operational work to include budget preparation and oversight. Advises in the development of project management plans in accordance withline and program roles and responsibilities.

Collaboration and Communication

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated record in developing collaborations, promoting teamwork, building consensus, and communicating effectively with staff, sponsors, and stakeholders.

Strong interpersonal skills when working with supervisees and internal and external customers.

Partnering to meet national security deliverables.

Security Clearance

Ability and desire to obtain Q/SCI clearance/access, which requires U.S. citizenship.

Education/Experience:Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a STEM field from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.Desired Qualifications:

Active Q/SCI clearance/access.

Experience working with some of A-1's customers and partners (e.g., U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health, Department of HomelandSecurity, Intelligence Community, World Health Organization, Defense Threat Reduction Agency).

Experience conducting and/or overseeing classified work performed in SCIFs, vaults, vault type rooms (VTR), or other classified areas.

An advanced STEM degree.

Prior record of program development, development of proposals, marketing of capabilities, and growth of customer relationships.

Prior experience supervising and leading teams of diverse individuals.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
