It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates who have: Ability to work comfortably at heights such as climbing ladders, working on scaffolds, platforms, and lifts. Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry heavy objects and equipment (50+ lbs.) Ability to follow written and verbal directions, ensure follow through on assignments and seek assistance or report concerns when needed. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED)’s Office of Facilities and Business Services is seeking candidates for a Maintenance Assistant position in the Cultural Education Center. Maintenance Assistants work under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor and perform a variety of semiskilled maintenance, repair, and related activities in one or a combination of mechanical, building, construction, motor vehicle and electrical trades. The incumbent will perform activities in support of the overall repair work on structures and equipment using hand and portable power tools, shop equipment, and measuring and testing instruments. The incumbent may occasionally operate trucks and light construction equipment and may also perform journey level activities under supervision or after receiving detailed instruction. The incumbent may supervise unskilled staff as necessary. Duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following: Perform a variety of tasks utilizing power and manual hand tools including but not limited to saws, hammers, drills, sanders, and stationary power tools; Perform routine repetitive semi-skilled maintenance and repair of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry and other facility services and equipment; Perform general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, mowing lawns, trimming, and removing trees and shrubs, maintaining roads and sidewalks, snow and ice removal, collection/pick-up of trash and other obstructions from the building and surrounding areas; Perform general facilities maintenance such as cleaning common areas, offices and restrooms, painting and moving furniture; Troubleshoot facility, equipment and/or machinery problems and work to resolve concerns in a timely manner; Perform routine repairs and maintenance on equipment and facility structures; Operate a motor vehicle, other motorized equipment, and a variety of light mechanized construction equipment. Operate small equipment including manual/electrical pallet jack; May work outside in various temperatures and inclement weather for extended periods of time; Analyze project needs and communicate same to supervisor and crew as applicable; As directed, may supervise appropriate subordinates to accomplish required tasks and duties; Serve as one of the primary point of contacts on-sight for contractors and vendors; and May perform journeymen level activities under supervision or after receiving detailed instructions. Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a Contingent-permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit.
