Statistical Assistant Position
Minimum Candidate Qualifications:
The candidate must have a minimum of:a. Bachelor's degree including 24 semester credit hours in mathematics, statistics, or actuarial science; andb. Eligible to work in New York State
Job Description and Required Services:
· assists in constructing actuarial tables by analyzing and presenting data;· assists in reviewing the actuarial basis of plans and calculates premiums; evaluates premium rates, reserves, and liabilities;· assists in reviewing methods used to value categories of policies, special benefits, or special liability terms;· assists in checking the mathematical accuracy of calculations;· participates in field examinations of one or more of the following: life insurance companies, fraternal benefit societies, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), commercial carriers, non-profits, and retirement systems;· assists in preparing valuation memoranda; assists in reviewing health insurer rate submissions and statistical compilations;· reviews insurance company rate filings and reserve analysis for compliance with standards; maintains in-house databases;· reviews claims records and death and disability cases to establish proper estimates of eventual incurred losses;· computes loss reserves for death and disability cases;· calculates the present values of workers' compensation cases and the amount payable to claimants;· calculates reserves for transfers, disability, and deferred allowances;· computes cost-of-living factors for supplemental pensions paid to annuitants;· checks computations for valuation and service retirement allowance· assists with special projects and research as needed; and· performs other duties as assigned.In addition, the candidate must possess and/or have the ability to:a. Work individually and as part of a team.b. Track and manage reporting projects without daily oversight.c. Excellent verbal communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.d. Strong project management skills, including experience managing multiple time-sensitive, complex projectssimultaneously.e. Detail-oriented with the ability to organize and prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.f. Proficiency with Microsoft 365, including working experience with Excel, WebEx, and Zoom.g. Manage varied tasks as assignedNotes:Temporary to Permanent Position: After a successful six-month temporary agreement term, successful completion of one examination from the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty Actuarial Society, and at the discretion of the supervising manager, the awarded candidate may be offered a full-time position at the Department.Telecommuting may be allowed at the discretion of the hiring managerThe Department does not provide parking, but the office is accessible by mass transit.
